Herbert wants to take in a boarder, which doesn't sit well with Dobie as he believes it will hurt his relationship with image conscious Thalia, who will probably thumb her nose at dating someone who has to take in a boarder to make ends meet. To the contrary, Thalia believes it's a great idea if only because it'll give Dobie more money to spend on her. They rent the room to foreign transfer student Carlos Romero, whose father is in the Argentine military and is in town on military maneuvers. Despite having money to stay at a hotel, Carlos wanted his first American experience to be with a typical American family. Dobie may regret the decision to rent to Carlos as he is charming, suave and rich, which is just what Thalia is looking for in a husband. Herbert may also regret the decision as Winnie decides to redecorate Carlos' room, the cost to do so which far outweighs the rent they receive from him.
