Rihanna's "Star Trek" IMAX Music Video

30 June 2016 9:02 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Several weeks ahead of the release of "Star Trek Beyond," Paramount Pictures has released the music video to Rihanna's tie-in single "Sledgehammer" - the first music video shot entirely with IMAX cameras (in this case the Alexa IMAX camera which was also used during the airport fight in "Captain America: Civil War").

Floria Sigismondi ("The Runaways") helms the video which sees the singer dressed in stylised make-up in a desert location - in fact the same place they shot portions of "Star Trek V" - dancing around as things ultimately turn cosmic and outright weird (in a good way). The clip also boasts the ship swarm we've seen in the trailers for the feature, along with the U.S.S. Enterprise from the Abrams films.

What's interesting here is that the song itself is quite strong, a decidedly better piece than other tie-in film songs of late such as »

American Pastoral Trailer Marks Ewan McGregor's Directing Debut

The actor is also getting ready to debut his directorial debut American Pastoral, with the first trailer arriving over the weekend. The first-time filmmaker also stars in this drama set during the Vietnam War.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Phillip Roth novel, American Pastoral follows a family whose seemingly idyllic existence is shattered by the social and political turmoil of the 1960s. Ewan McGregor (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Beginners) makes his directorial debut and stars as Seymour "Swede" Levov, a once legendary high school athlete who is now a successful businessman married to Dawn, a former beauty queen. American Pastoral Teaser Trailer Hopes Imagery Sells Story

26 June 2016 10:11 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Ewan McGregor chose to tackle a fantastically difficult story for his first foray into directing, and that’s only partially because American Pastoral is so highly regarded.

It isn’t just that the book has received so much critical and popular acclaim, but the fact that an adaptation could so easily go wrong with a story that attempts to tackle the human condition in precisely this way.

Philip Roth’s novel is an almost bizarrely pointed look at how people “work,” and what it means to try to know and understand other people. While the plot, more or less, focuses on a specific incident, it is as much about what happens to anyone if you start really examining the facade everyone puts forward as being “them.”

That’s a tricky movie no matter what the “plot” involves, and it’s the sort of thing that requires a director that really »

Ewan McGregor Makes Directorial Debut In Trailer for Philip Roth Adaptation ‘American Pastoral’

23 June 2016 12:46 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It seems impossible, or maybe just stupid: adapt what is perhaps the most acclaimed novel by perhaps our greatest living novelist as your directorial debut, which you’ll also star in as a character with whom, based on the many and very critical descriptions from said most-acclaimed-novel-by-greatest-living-novelist, you don’t even have the greatest resemblance. Here we are, then, with Ewan McGregor‘s American Pastoral, an adaptation of Philip Roth‘s Pulitzer-winning, meta-fictional masterpiece of grieving, complex generational rifts, and glove-making — not exactly a Sundance-premiering dramedy.

I very much hope not to look like a fool in four months’ time when I say, now, that the first preview points towards something with character — perhaps rather good, even. Early days, yes (hence the disclaimer), yet this is a fine sampling of period-evoking design, shots and palette that evoke some sense of visual purpose — hello, The American and Control Dp Martin Ruhe — and, »

Kristen Stewart has become a critical darling - but does the public even know that?

18 May 2016 6:14 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It's fair to say that Kristen Stewart has been straining mightily to turn over a new leaf in her career, and in some sense, she already has: in the years since she finished her run as the star of the critically-reviled but wildly-popular Twilight series, she's managed to transform into one the critical community's favorite stars. Look no further than the reviews out of Cannes for Stewart's performance in Olivier Assayas's uncategorizable Personal Shopper, in which the actress stars as Maureen, an American living in Paris who pays the bills by working as an assistant to a demanding French model/actress (Nora von Waldstätten). She also happens to be a psychic medium who is literally and figuratively haunted by the spirit of her late twin brother, who died in the French capital shortly before the events of the movie begin to unfurl. While several members of the notoriously volatile »

Slideshow: New Book for Rocker Lita Ford is ‘Living Like a Runaway’

Chicago – There are rock stars, and then there are the women of “The Runaways.” The girl group that spawned Joan Jett was also notable for proving that punk rock was not just reserved for dudes. Lita Ford, the lead guitarist, has just written a memoir of those heady days – “Living Like a Runaway” – and appeared recently at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., at an event sponsored by Anderson’s Bookshop.

Formed in 1975 by Joan Jett and Sandy West, The Runaways were set with their personnel – including Lita Ford – by the time their first album debuted in 1976. They aligned themselves with the burgeoning punk rock movement of the era, touring with The Ramones in 1977. They were also huge in Japan, with record sales there rivaling Abba, Kiss and Led Zeppelin of the era. The broke up in 1979, after playing their »
