Storyline

Dexter apologizes to Rita and admits to her that Lila was one of the biggest mistakes of his life. Lila on the other hand isn't quite as ready to give him up and shows up at the station hinting that she may have a few things to share with Dexter's colleagues. Under constant FBI surveillance, Dexter can't get rid of his last victim's remains. With the evidence he's acquired at Dexter's apartment, Sgt. Doakes seeks the help of an old friend in confirming its value. When Dexter realizes his slides are missing, he thinks the jig is up but Lundy and his FBI colleagues don't quite have it right. Special Agent Lundy and Debra spend the night together. Written by garykmcd

Do you wanna be a cutting edge show, or a glorified soap opera?
3 April 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Unfortunately, this is one question that the show has proved it's unable to answer.

You want to make a show about a vigilante serial killer? Fine. But if the best you can do to support that edgy foundation is pile one soap opera story arc on top of another one, you've missed the point -- and the power -- considerably. And that's exactly what is happening here.

The list of supporting characters is weak and spotty at best. So to "spice it up" they've introduced elements that would make a soap opera seem sappy. And that's a shame. Because this show had some major potential.

But as often happens with shows that are produced by/for major networks, the final result is so diluted, and so far afield from the original intent, that it's barely recognizable.

Resistance is futile? LOL. Compromising a show's value(s) results in a protracted effort -- in utter futility. You can introduce all the twists and turns you want -- it does not result in genuine drama. On the contrary -- it results in a convoluted melodramatic mess.

As far as this episode goes...there are plenty of twists and turns to keep one's interest. OTOH, there is also way too much filler. The relationship between Debra and Lundy is one of the low points of this series. And it drags the energy and the power of this episode down as well. While not the worst, it's clearly not one of the best either.
