Final trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story attached to Marvel’s Doctor Strange

29 September 2016 6:04 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

This won’t come as much of a surprise, but Disney has announced that the final trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be attached to the theatrical release of Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

The superhero blockbuster opens in many international markets in late October (including the UK on October 25th) ahead of its U.S. debut on November 4th, so we’d have to assume the Rogue One trailer will hit online some time in October. The final trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrived on October 19th 2015, coinciding with advance tickets going on sale, so expect a similar date for the new Rogue One trailer too.

Sean Penn just celebrated a major first—his first tweet, of course. The Oscar winner probably didn't expect to log onto Twitter when he walked onto the set of The Late Show with host Stephen Colbert. However, the comedian managed to get the luddite his own handle on the website and even offered an introductory course on hashtags.  "Would you like to make your first tweet right now?" Colbert asked the star and Penn obliged.  nullAs a nod to his brand new audiobook, Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff, Penn gave a shout out to the downloadable free audiobook's mysterious author, Pappy Pariah.  "Pappy, where r ya?" the Milk star »

Valene Kane playing Jyn Erso’s mother in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

26 September 2016 4:06 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

We’ve known for a while that Mads Mikkelsen is playing Galen Erso, the father of Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and now we know who’s playing her mother too, with actress Valene Kane (The Fall) revealing that she’s set to portray Lyra Erso in December’s Anthology movie.

“I grew up watching Stars Wars and I didn’t believe it was happening until I was filming in Iceland,” said Kane in an interview with told Belfast Live. “[The film] has a really edgy independent vibe.”

Given that Kane shot her scenes in Iceland (and the fact she’s four years younger than Felicity Jones), we can assume that she’ll feature in flashback scenes with a young Jyn Erso and will presumably only have a minor role in the film.

Page To Screen: Adapting Forrest Gump turned a caustic satire into a sentimental romance

21 September 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

In Page To Screen, we compare a movie to the book that spawned it. The analysis goes into deep detail about specific plot points—in other words, you’ve been warned.

Is there a point where a film adaptation, by deviating too much from its source material, ceases to be an adaptation?

Consider The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, the film of which retains only the basic conceit of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s original short story—a man who is born old and ages backwards. Everything else, including the vast majority of characters and incidents, are original to the screenplay, making it hard to view it as an adaptation in anything other than a technical way. (Writer Eric Roth was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for it, while Dustin Lance Black won Best Original Screenplay for Milk, demonstrating the confusing delineation the Oscars makes between being bound by historical record »

Michael Giacchino replaces Alexandre Desplat as composer on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

16 September 2016 1:29 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It looks like the extensive reshoots on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has led to scheduling conflicts for composer Alexandre Desplat, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that the Oscar-winner is no longer available to score the film.

Stepping in as Desplat’s replacement is another Academy Award-winner in Michael Giacchino, who has worked extensively with Disney in the past on the likes of Up, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Cars 2, Inside Out, Zootopia, John Carter, Tomorrowland and the upcoming Doctor Strange.

Giacchino will not have the distinction of becoming the first composer aside from John Williams to score a Star Wars movie. He is also a huge Star Wars fan, and made a cameo as a Stormtrooper in last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was directed by his friend J.J. Abrams.
