The Top 10 Movies Of 2010: Josh's Take

31 December 2010 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Are you top ten-ed out? Probably? But damn it, I didn't see a zillion movies this year (Ok, around 150) to not earn the right to subject you to a list of my 10 favorites. Honestly this list is probably more for me than for you guys. As we head into the awards season (People's Choice is just days away, get your powder blue tux ready!), what better way to get into the right mindset of endless accolades than to bestow my own. So here we go folks... the top 10 films of 2010* according to me.

*List void on January 1st when I'll surely change my mind about a few of these.

Top 10 (In Alphabetical Order)...

"127 Hours"

At face value a gimmick of a film, but so much more in the hands of Danny Boyle. By turns contemplative, visceral, epic and intimate, "127 Hours" added up to one of the more moving pieces of cinema this year (and, »

BAFTAs promise preview of Oscars

31 December 2010 11:08 AM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Since the British Academy Film Awards shifted to take place in the middle of Oscar balloting, they have increased in importance on the kudos calendar. The BAFTAs are the only one of the precursors prizes to have a similar make up of voters drawn from all branches of the film world. That makes them even more helpful in predicting the eventual line-ups at the Academy Awards. Although this added attention and accompanying Hollywood glitz and glamour have turned the BAFTAs into an A-list event, the voters still have their own opinions and their winners can differ dramatically from the Oscar champs. The most recent BAFTA Best Picture champs have been "The Aviator," "Brokeback Mountain," "The Queen," "Atonement," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Hurt Locker" with only the latter two of those going on to prevail at the Oscars.   On Jan. 7, BAFTA will publish longlists with the 15 films or names still in »

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

Blu-ray Deals: 48 Blu-rays Under $10

30 December 2010 9:00 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Amazon is having a great end of the year sale on Blu-rays and I've compiled a list of the 48 best titles under $10.  Like all deals at Amazon, prices change all the time (probably based on inventory) so if you're interested in some of the movies, don't wait too long.  Remember, if you spend over $25 dollars, you get free shipping.  Also, depending on where you live, you might not have to pay sales tax. Disclaimer: Collider is an Amazon affiliate (which means we make a small percentage of every sale). Just know Collider is not corporate owned and every dollar earned helps run the site. Here are the deals broken down by price: $6.99 Ghost Rider (Extended Cut) [Blu-ray] $6.99 (65% off) $7.99 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon [Blu-ray] $7.99 (68% off) Jason and the Argonauts [Blu-ray] $7.99 (68% off) The Natural [Blu-ray] $7.99 (68% off) Léon: The Professional (Theatrical and Extended Edition) [Blu-ray] $7.99 (68% off) The International [Blu-ray] $7.99 (68% off) Dogma [Blu-ray] $7.99 (60% off) Underworld (Unrated) [Blu-ray] $7.99 (60% off) Black Hawk Down [Blu-ray] $7.99 (68% off »

My Top 10 Films of 2010

30 December 2010 5:46 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

The year is almost over, and you know what that means: list-making time across the entire internet. Venkman just added to the fray with his own Top 10 list, so I figured I'd throw my selections out there for you all to see.

Note: this is my personal list of my favorite films of the year, not a list of what I consider to be the "best" movies of the year (although many coincide). Here we go!

10. The Fighter

I literally had The Town in this spot as I was typing this list, but something came over me at the last second to change it. That's how close those two movies were battling for a spot here, and I think the emotional core of The Fighter gave it the slight edge over Ben Affleck's solid heist film. The Fighter features fantastic performances from every member of the cast, with Christian Bale being the clear standout, »

Stephen Dorff promises naked muscle and leather in Immortals

30 December 2010 8:30 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The Mythology of the ancient world is enjoying a resurgence with such films as 300; Clash of the Titans; its upcoming sequel Wrath of the Titans; Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief; and director Tarsem Singh's Immortals, due out on November 11, 2011.

Singh previously directed The Cell and The Fall, as well as being an assistant director on David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Immortals - previously known as War of the Gods and then Dawn of War before settling on its current title - sees Greek warrior Theseus (Henry Cavill) battle evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) who wants to unleash the Titans (elder gods imprisoned within Mount Tartarus since the dawn of time) to destroy mankind and annihilate the Olympian deities.

Also starring in the film is Stephen Dorff as a slave called Stavros; he joins a cast that also includes Twilight's Kellan Lutz as Poseidon, Luke Evans »

Review: 127 Hours

29 December 2010 4:59 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Aron Ralston. If you haven’t heard that name before then you should either a) keep reading to discover what this film is all about or b) stop reading right now if you want the movie to be a surprise. In 2003, Ralston became an overnight American hero after he was found wandering the Utah desert with only one arm intact and in need of a serious drink. Turns out he had been stuck in a canyon for nearly 6 days with a limited amount of water and only a blunt knife standing between him and the billion-year-old boulder that was crushing his arm. Sound like a recipe for movie success? Well, in the right hands, yes (pun not intended). If Ralston’s book, Between a Rock and a Hard Place had been put into the tender loving arms (okay… Pun intended) of the Saw movie-makers (and yes, apparently they did ask »

Over the next few days we'll be glancing into 2011's future to preview some of the films arriving over the next 12 months. First up is January through to April, which sees plenty of Oscar contenders arriving on UK shores, a Glee star making a bid for movie stardom and Justin Bieber continuing his quest for world domination.

January

Danny Boyle follows up Slumdog Millionaire with intense survival drama 127 Hours. James Franco plays climber Aron Ralston as he struggles to free himself from under a trapped boulder. With only a blunt knife for company, expect blood! "There is an extraordinary, very profound and deep sense of euphoria in getting out of there. Life being given back again," Boyle says. Michel Gondry teams up with Seth Rogen for superhero film The Green Hornet, so expect more laughs and quirkiness than your average vigilante (more) »

Sound On Sight’s Best Films of 2010

29 December 2010 12:54 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

It’s always tricky for the Sound On Sight staff to choose their favourite films each year. Since we have contributors across the globe and because many movies have different release dates in various countries, there’s always a few movies that not everyone on our team has the opportunity to watch. These films have a disadvantage. since half of the team can’t vote for them, and so sometimes their is one or two great films that just don’t make it in. However I do believe that each and every year the eclectic mix of movies that appear on our list, really does show how much ground we cover. On our list this year you will find three Canadian films, several genre films, a few foreign language films and a bit of the mainstream. Each Sound On Sight critic submits a list of their ten favourite films in order of preference. »

Toy Story 3's Brilliant Oscar Campaign

28 December 2010 10:08 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Let's talk about the best Fyc campaign of the year. The one where Pixar tries to build a case for Toy Story 3 as the Best Picture of the year, not just a nominee. Pixar won't be happy to just get the annual ghetto Oscar for Animated Feature, they want the big one. Do you believe this is possible? I can't say that I do...

Or, rather, it's possible but not bloody likely. A good correlation might be the foreign language film category. They also have their own category and very few have ever been nominated for Best Picture and none have won (the closest to a "foreign" winner is Slumdog Millionaire which is technically a British film but is partially in Hindi).

But let's look at the ads themselves, from worst to best, which use "Not since _____ " to compare TS3 to previous Best Picture winners.

Here's the two I find most problematic. »

Scott Feinberg’S Top 10 Films Of ’10

Please Note: The following rankings and remarks reflect my personal opinions and do/will not in any way impact my projections or analysis on this site, wherein I strive above all else to correctly forecast what will happen, not what I believe should happen. My demonstrated ability to do that over the years is what has led most of you to my site, and any failure to do that will undoubtedly lead you away from it, so you can rest assured that I mean it when I say that one has/will have no bearing on the other.

Scott Feinberg’s Top 10 Films of 2010

1. “The Social Network” (Columbia, 10/1, PG-13, trailer)

The Social Network Tops La Weekly/indieWIRE 2010 Critics' Poll

Rooney Mara, Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network David Fincher's drama about the creation of Facebook, The Social Network, topped the 2010 L.A. Weekly/indieWIRE poll of 85 American critics. It was followed by Olivier Assayas' made-for-tv miniseries Carlos (screened at theaters in the United States); Debra Granik's family drama Winter's Bone, which topped the Gotham Awards; and Roman Polanski's mystery thriller The Ghost Writer, which swept the 2010 European Film Awards. Last year, Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker was the favorite awards-season movie. Yet, it landed in third place in the L.A. Weekly/indieWIRE poll, behind Olivier Assayas' Summer Hours and Joel Coen and Ethan Coen's A Serious Man. In 2008, Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire won nearly every critics' group's awards in North America, but at the top of the L.A. Weekly/indieWIRE poll was Hou Hsiao-hsien's The Flight of the Red Balloon, »

James Franco's Grandma's Funny '127 Hours' Christmas Greeting

25 December 2010 10:56 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Merry Christmas from the Francos! Fox Searchlight has been running a viral campaign for Danny Boyle's 127 Hours that involves sending out shirts that say "I Kept My Eyes Open for 127 Hours" and a website at ikeptmyeyesopenfor127hours.com, where you can request a shirt. They're playing off of all the occurrences of fainting, which happened separately at both showings I attended. The star of the film, James Franco, is home for the holidays and recorded a video on Funny or Die (via Deadline) with his grandma with a special message to everyone who hasn't seen 127 Hours yet. It's a fun video definitely worth watching today. Enjoy! 127 Hours is directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle, of Trainspotting, The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Slumdog Millionaire previously. "We want it to be a challenge for you guys as well... to see if you can watch it," Boyle said. Obviously some »

The Toronto Film Festival’s Essential 100 Movies

22 December 2010 11:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It seems like only yesterday that the American Film Institute released their 100 Years...100 Movies [1] list. Actually though, it was over 10 years ago when we first got our look at that "definitive" list of the 100 best American movies. They then did a ten year anniversary of it in 2007 with only minor adjustments and both years Citizen Kane held the number one place as the best American movie. Of course, the problem with those lists is that they only list American films. While Hollywood might be considered the epicenter of film, the art form itself spans the globe, way beyond American borders. That's why the Toronto International Film Festival came up with their Essential 100 movies. Created by merging lists made by Toronto Film Festival supporters along with another made by their programmers, these are supposed to be the 100 essential movies every cinephile must see. And it starts off with a bang as Citizen Kane has been toppled. »

Staff Picks: Breanne L. Heldman’s Top 10 Movies of 2010

21 December 2010 4:00 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

I must confess – I genuinely think 2010 was a good year in movies.

Of course, I’m not simply basing that on a series of obviously stellar performances and the number of films deserving of awards recognition. And I’m not making my list after staring at a bunch of pundits’ thoughts on the matter.

My favorite movies are ones that either make me feel something real and physical (and not just that sense of “I’m so smart. I saw that little indie”) or that I’m inclined to watch over and over. Better yet, I like my movies to do both, and it’s a tall order.

So sure, I really enjoyed and appreciated “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network” – I’m an Aaron Sorkin fan, after all – but they didn’t make enough of an emotional impact and I can’t picture myself popping the disc »
