Poignant and wrenching
D 4 Delivery is starring and was written and directed by Heland Lee. It is a distressing and poignant short film about Jaime the Chinese food delivery man. Jaime has many challenges in his life beside the inherent dangers of his job, but he soldiers on doing his best anyway. Jaime's world is filled with dangers, getting caught by immigration, homophobia, and the danger of being robbed and beaten in his line of work.
The cruel violence in "D 4 Delivery" was completely neutralized by the tenderness of the vignette of our hero and his now absent lover. Seeing that New York was filled with memories of love and happiness for him as well as his everyday struggles both internal and external helped me to understand why he stays and faces the danger day after day. How he keeps going. Mr. Lee communicates so much with his directing style, with minimal dialog. The stark contrast between the frenetic New York City outside of his orderly little apartment gives the viewer the same sense of relief and tranquility the he feels. Again allowing the viewer to understand how he copes with his daily struggles.
D 4 Delivery is based on actual events that really happened to Chinese food delivery men in New York City. He ends the film by commemorating these brave, everyday people who were killed simply trying to earn an honest wage. It brings home how real and commonplace this danger is for some people. The list is way too long, and I don't mean he should have made it shorter, I just wish we all could have by saving them.
