Hardcore Russian fun.

Alright. The Green elephant.

First of all, for this movie, you need a good translator who understands Russian and English slang and jargon. For example, In Russia there is Dmitry Puchkov, who translated "Full Metal Jacket" into Russian and actually made it sound better in some parts. It's not an easy thing to do. I mean, some things are just hard to translate.

Like The Drill Sergeant in Full Metal Jacket, Green Elephant is not an easily translated movie. The other thing this movie has in common with FMJ is that it's kind of divided in two parts the way I see it. The first part is great, and in my view, the only reason to watch this movie. The second part is nothing but cheap exploitation to extract some shock value, and frankly, I'm not impressed. If you are looking to be shocked- go and watch the civil war in Syria on youtube. Homosexual rape, all covered with animal organs is just not enough anymore.

For me, the best part of the movie is the two guys stuck together in a small room and as time goes by, things slowly deteriorate as you realize that one of them is not right in the head. Filled with psychedelic overtones, It has a very steady progressive pace- kind of like in classical music it slowly builds up and reaches a loud climax.

The characters are completely believable and the actors did a great job. I'm not even sure if one of them was actually "acting". You can really see this guy smearing feces all over himself in his spare time as a hobby.

Now, I don't know how to rate this movie, because you got to have some kind of standard or comparison to rate something. This movie is too unusual for a regular rating scale. I give it 7 stars for originality, good acting, great sense of humor, and just for the fact that I enjoyed watching it.
