It will be that, Casablanca, Sabrina, Picnic...?

It is a beautiful love story, that of Luke and Lorelai. A tale of two people who have been secretly in love with each other forever, from the very first camera shot. And why so? Perhaps because they are so close together that they fear that anything they will say or do may tear them apart. So, for four full seasons they will communicate only by symbols. And using symbols as weapons they will destroy any other suitor, rival, that dares to come too close.

Coffee and food are the strongest of these symbols. They mean love, specially coffee. Lorelai needs it badly and only Luke's can satisfy her. From that we could have known that Max was a goner from the start—she hated his coffee. And he was only the first to go--that we know. Here Luke ruins their affair by leaving inside her home his (very symbolic) toolbox—to which she even puts a name, Bert!—provoking a panicked Max into a hasty marriage proposal. Aware also of the value of a symbol, he offer his own, if empty, one: a thousand daisies. As the engagement goes on, we realize that it is Luke the one she is really pinning for: she baits him, trying to shake him into action. Instead, he dares her to go even further. He even builds her a chuppah for her to face, in the material world, the enormity of her actions. At this point Lorelai is ready to settle for the slightest of hints. And that he gives her, telling her that, yeah, he would consider marriage if he ever finds "the right person". She immediately calls off the wedding. But he is just doing what she did before to Rachel. She also let go that affair until a crucial moment, when Luke's coffee--love became tasteless to her. She then jumped into action delivering the knock-out punch; she did the wifely thing, marking her territory: she clothed Luke. Poor Rachel never knew what had hit her. And after that it was Nicole. But in her case it was rather Luke who did it, with his Prince Charming Saves Damsel In Distress bit. After those 30 grands changed hands without her ever been consulted, Nicole knew too that she was a goner. The coffee--food symbol is so powerful here that it remains strong even during the less stellar moments of the series: Chris realizes that his marriage is history too when he catches Lorelai committing her worst possible form of adultery: she is still taking Luke's food! Even today (7-19)when Lorelai is back in the diner, the symbol still lives on: she is served coffee in a much smaller cup. (Interestingly enough, the only one suitor capable of matching Luke's coffee, Alex, disappeared without trace from the series; the Digger affair does not count, as it was simply a symbolical suicide attempt, from which she was promptly rescued by both dads anyway.)

Houses and boats are also strong symbols here (new against old). And places, names(Emily hates hearing her using the word Independence). And motor vehicles. Even baseball caps. Luke and Lorelai drive the same kind of utility vehicle, which tells us that they are soul mates. That is why the demise of hers is such a grave event; it means that the wounds are too deep, that they may be fatal. Luke may be dumb at times but he is not stupid, he knows the value of symbols; he has been using them for seven seasons! That is why he knows that if he is ever to win back Lorelai's heart, that jeep has to work again. With that, some ice has finally been broken; the chemistry, the banter, seems somewhat back. Will that be enough....? For one, the loving feeling appears so, as far as she is concerned, as she tells him so poignantly with her song. All what remains to be seen now is what kind of ending this tale will have. Will it be Casablanca? Sabrina? Picnic....?
