Trivia

This episode had first been performed live at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater on November 19, 2007 to benefit the show's production assistants in the wake of the Writers' Guild strike, complete with mock commercials. Paula Pell played C.C. instead of Edie Falco. The amount of fun they had doing it led to 30 Rock: Live Show (2010). See more »

"Oh, and in '84, I voted for Reagan!"

Secrets and Lies is a freaking great 30 Rock episode for its combination of three elements: Jane Krakowski, Tracy Morgan and Alec Baldwin. Oh, and Tina Fey's desperate attempts to keep everyone happy.

Th first problem emerges when Jenna receives a (fake) award for starring in a "movie based on a musical based on a movie" (that happens to be a real movie, the 2005 remake of The Producers - which she doesn't appear in - starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, both of whom appeared in the show during either the first or the second season) and Tracy gets jealous, prompting Liz to stage an award show just for him, which in turn causes Jenna to think Liz is favoring Tracy over her. In the meantime, Jack and C.C., still seeing each other, are thinking of going public about their relationship, but Jack, always the die-hard Republican, has some doubts about how his peers will react.

Any time Tracy or Jenna argue with Liz is, by itself, a perfect excuse for at least ten minutes of good comedy. That they both do it in this episode means there's twice as much fun to be had, although is has to be said Morgan's OTT insanity will always be a tad more amusing than Krakowski's more controlled madness. And then there's Baldwin and Falco, mixing sweetness and outright hilarity in what instantly qualifies as a comedy of manners par excellence. The last time a romantic subplot was this clever and witty was in Frasier, so perhaps it's no coincidence 30 Rock is the first sitcom since Kelsey Grammar's finest hour to win the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series two years in a row (Frasier actually won five in a row; we'll see how Rock will fare in due time).
