50 dedications at the end of movies (and what they mean)

14 November 2013 1:57 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Odd List Simon Brew 15 Nov 2013 - 07:08

Lots of films are dedicated to, or in memory of someone. But it's not always clear why. We've been finding out...

Back when Breaking Bad returned for its final batch of episodes in August 2013, it had a dedication at the end of it. The card read 'Dedicated to our friend Kevin Cordasco'. As it turned out, Kevin Cordasco was a 16-year old who had been battling cancer for seven years, who had met both Bryan Cranston and Vince Gilligan. Cordasco died before he could ever get to see the episode dedicated to him.

I found this such a moving story, that it got me wondering about the dedications that appear on films, and what the story behind them was. After all, the dedications are there for a reason. What I uncovered was some funny stories, mainly extremely sad ones, and some extremely moving dedications. »

‘The Lego Movie’ Gives Us Batman & Lord Business Posters

12 November 2013 10:10 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Yesterday we were able to show off The Lego Movie’s posters of Charlie Day voiced Benny Morgan Freeman’s Vitruvius. Now we have the film’s villain and one of it’s heroes. The two Wills (as I like to call them), Will Arnett and Will Ferrell each take on a role in the building bricks based movie. Arnett plays Batman and Ferrell plays the film’s antagonist, Lord Business. Over the last decade, Lego has really branched out into other franchises, especially in the realm of computer games, so it’s great we get to see some on the big screen. Obviously Warner Bros., who both produce The Lego Movie and own the rights to Batman, are allowing some of their other big name superheroes to appear, but there have also been rumours regarding the inclusion of characters from other popular series. Will Ferrell will once again voice a villain, »

Admission review: screwball smart

5 November 2013 11:04 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

A romantic dramedy about a passionate erudite oddball woman with her own life? Hooray! I’m “biast” (pro): love Fey and Rudd

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Wait, what’s this? A romantic dramedy about a smart woman with her own life who isn’t present in the story merely to aid some messed-up man on his path to being a better person? Hooray!

But Admission is even better than that. Portia Nathan (Tina Fey: Megamind, Date Night) is an admissions officer at Princeton University. John Pressman (Paul Rudd: This Is the End, How Do You Know) is the head teacher/administrator at an alternative school who is advocating for one of his more unusual students to be granted a coveted spot in the upcoming freshman class. They don’t meet cute: they meet weird, »

Though we now cover the whole swath of the film industry, film music got us started and is still something very much near and dear to our hearts. Thn’s Favourite Funny People Get Animated!

20 June 2013 3:40 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

When Despicable Me hit cinemas in 2010 comedian Steve Carell gave us a brilliantly voiced Russian super-villain whose dream in life was to be accepted.  He delivered a pitch perfect performance as the bumbling evil mastermind who tries to steal the moon but ends with a lot more than he bargained for! To celebrate the upcoming release of Despicable Me 2 Thn takes a look back at some of our favourite movies in which comic actors have lent their tremendous tones to some of the most entertaining animated characters around.

‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’ Trailer: Welcome to the 1980s

19 June 2013 12:03 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It’s been a good nine years since last we saw Ron “I’m Kind of a Big Deal” Burgandy (Will Ferrell) on the big screen in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy. Will Ferrell, of course, has had plenty of box office successes in the time since – e.g., Talladega Nights and Megamind - but nothing that has really surpassed Anchorman in terms of pop cultural recognition. Maybe that’s why he’s making Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

The sequel, co-written and directed by Adam McKay, sees the return of Burgandy’s team – Bryan (Paul Rudd), Brick (Steve Carell), and Champ (David Koechner) – to the news after years of being off the air, this time in the always hilarious 1980s. Cue the Journey music.

Unsurprisingly, the trailer is less about showcasing the plot of the film and more about showcasing the ...

Steve Carell Goes Gru on 'Ellen' for 'Despicable Me 2'

31 May 2013 7:47 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

There are only so many clever ways for a real-life actor to promote an animated movie character because, with all due respect to the trials of voice-work, most of the real heavy lifting is done by the animation crew. But this week Steve Carell raised the bar quite a bit for his fellow tongue-lending thesps by appearing on "Ellen" as a rather convincing human variation of his "Despicable Me 2" cartoon counterpart Gru.

Taking a leaf from the Will Ferrell and Tina Fey a la "Megamind" TV promos playbook, the funnyman stayed in character during his interview, rattling on about his extreme passion for Starbucks coffee and ultimate, life-long desire to shimmy through the audience.

As with "Despicable Me," this Gru ultimately got his shot at shakin' his tiny hiney on-screen during his "Ellen" chat, and Carell did a pretty nice job of replicating some of the character's signature moves. »

Watch: Steve Carell Appears Live as Gru from 'Despicable Me' on 'Ellen'

30 May 2013 2:50 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

During Comic-Con in 2010, Will Ferrell went the extra mile to dress up like his character Megamind from the DreamWorks Animation film, and now his Anchorman: The Legend Continues co-star Steve Carell has done the same thing. Appearing on "The Ellen Show" with Ellen DeGeneres, Carell appeared in a full costume as Gru from Despicable Me and the forthcoming sequel. Just looking at Carell like this is hilarious because of the strange proportions of Gru as an animated character, but seeing him dance around the show and stay in character is just laugh-out-loud funny. Things like this need to happen more often. Here's Steve Carell in character as Gru from Despicable Me on "The Ellen Show" (via YouTube): Despicable Me 2 is directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud and written by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul, who all held the same positions on the original film. New Pacific Rim Stills Show Off The Giant Monsters

28 May 2013 10:53 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Guillermo del Toro's last directorial effort was in 2008, the year that Hellboy II: The Golden Army was released. In the years since, the director tangoed with the idea of directing The Hobbit, tried his hardest to get At The Mountains of Madness made, and produced a few movies like Mama, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Megamind and Rise of the Guardians, but spent all that time away from the director's chair. Finally, however, the wait ends this summer. This July del Toro will deliver some giant monster vs. giant robot action in the form of Pacific Rim, and we couldn't be more excited. And these two new stills certainly do nothing to hamper that feeling. As you can see above and below, Empire has gotten their hands on two new images from the upcoming sci-fi epic, and they do quite a good job showing off the ridiculous scale »
