As critics swoon over the British star's timbre and tone, it is clear that a great voice is still essential for any great movie actor
This week, Benedict Cumberbatch has been basking in praise for his portrayal of the villain, John Harrison, in Jj Abrams' new film, Star Trek Into Darkness – more particularly, his voice has been drawing raves.
"So sepulchrally resonant that it could have been synthesised from the combined timbres of Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Alan Rickman holding an elocution contest down a well," sighed The Independent's Jonathan Romney. "The deep-voiced Cumberbatch asserts fully self-justified treachery", asserted The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy. In The New Yorker, Anthony Lane launched a career-overview of Cumberbatch's "honeyed mellifluous voice", concluding: "The timbre remains in Abrams film." The Daily Mirror judged its readers so in need of a top-up of Cumberbatch's Burtonesque baritone, it linked to a video in which »

There aren't that many Brad Pitt movies that are kid-friendly. With the exception of his involvement in movies like "Megamind," "Moneyball," "Happy Feet Two" and "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas," the majority of the films Pitt's made in the past 10 years either aren't ones his children would want to watch or aren't ones they should watch.
That's why Pitt turned to his sons when it came time to choose his next project. He told reporters at CinemaCon that he asked Maddox, 11, Pax, 9, and Knox, 4, what movie they would like to see him star in, and they decided on "World War Z."
"Four years ago I knew nothing about zombies but now I consider myself an expert," Pitt admits, according to Deadline. "This whole thing started because I just wanted to do a film my boys could see before they turned 18, one they liked anyway and they loved zombies. So »

The Croods easily took the top spot on a busy weekend at the box office, though the real surprise was the impressive performance of Olympus Has Fallen. Meanwhile, Spring Breakers did decent business in its nationwide expansion, though it still fell behind Tina Fey-Paul Rudd disappointment Admission. The Top 12 earned an estimated $131.9 million, which is unfortunately off 35 percent from last year when The Hunger Games alone made over $152 million. The Croods grossed an estimated $44.7 million from 4,046 locations. Among recent original DreamWorks Animation movies, it's about even with 2010's How to Train Your Dragon ($43.7 million) and Megamind ($46 million), and a vast improvement over November's Rise of the Guardians (which took 11 days to get to $44 million). This is without a doubt a good start for The Croods, though it was hard to imagine it going much lower. The movie had a competent marketing effort, and benefited from the fact that »

The box office should pick up a bit this weekend thanks to the arrival of three new nationwide releases and the expansion of an arthouse hit. Opening at 4,046 locations (over 3,000 in 3D) DreamWorks Animation's The Croods should be a big enough draw among family audiences to take the top spot away from two-time winner Oz The Great and Powerful. Unfortunately, this is the one-year anniversary of The Hunger Games's incredible $152.5 million debut, so it will be the latest weekend in which there's a noticeable year-over-year decrease. The Croods arrives at a critical time for DreamWorks Animation, which since 1998 has produced 25 movies that have earned over $10 billion worldwide. From 2006 to 2012, DreamWorks had an exclusive output deal with Paramount Pictures; that was not renewed, though, and beginning with The Croods all DreamWorks movies will be handled by 20th Century Fox. Also, DreamWorks is coming off one of their biggest disappointments ever »

Our selected celebrity to be included in our “Hollywood TV Star of the Week Photo Gallery” is Tina Fey. Elizabeth Stamatina “Tina” Fey (born May 18, 1970) is an American actress, comedienne, writer and producer, known for her work on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live (SNL) (1997–2006), the critically acclaimed NBC comedy series 30 Rock (2006–2013), and such films as Mean Girls (2004), Baby Mama (2008) and Date Night (2010). Fey first broke into comedy as a featured player in the Chicago-based improvisational comedy group The Second City. She then joined SNL as a writer, later becoming head writer and a performer, known for her position as co-anchor in the Weekend Update segment. In 2004 she adapted the screenplay Mean Girls in which she also co-starred. After leaving SNL in 2006, she created the television series 30 Rock, a situation comedy loosely based on her experiences at SNL. In the series, Fey portrays the head writer of a fictional sketch comedy series. »

<< Continued from "March 2013 Preview"March 22DreamWorks Animation's The Croods (their first movie distributed by 20th Century Fox) is 2013's first major animated offering, and should have no problem leading the box office on the weekend of March 22. DreamWorks hasn't had a ton of success with original animated movies lately*Megamind was a bit underwhelming, while November's Rise of the Guardians is a well-documented disaster*and the hope is to reverse that trend with The Croods. The marketing so far has been pushing the How to Train Your Dragon connection, and the fact that the titular group is a prehistoric family should make this an easy sell to family audiences. Still, matching Dragon's $217.6 million domestic haul will be tough; instead, look for abnormally strong numbers overseas, where Fox traditionally excels.Olympus Has Fallen is the first of two 2013 movies in which a terrorist group takes over the White House; Sony hasn't »

Jason Moore, the director of the hit musical comedy Pitch Perfect , looks to have found his next project. Deadline reports that he's eyeing a Universal Pictures comedy called The Nest and that Tina Fey is in talks to headline. Paul Pella wrote the screenplay from her own original idea. The story follows two sisters (one of which Fey would play) who spend a final weekend in their childhood home after their parents put the property up for sale. Fey's successful sitcom "30 Rock" ran its series finale last week, leaving the actress free for more big screen pursuits. She last appeared on the big screen in 2010's Date Night (and also provided a voice in MegaMind the same year) and will soon open the comedy drama Admission and has begun production on Walt Disney »

After being dormant for so long, the Muppets are on the road back to relevancy. Their adventures have taken them from the fantastic Treasure Island to the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. It seems that Kermit and Miss Piggy get by with the help of their friends.
It appears that their newest buddy will be Tina Fey. She is in talks for the sequel which will be set against a European backdrop and the plot will involve some sort of international caper. Fey’s role will be that of a Russian gulag prison guard. Details of the story are scant albeit for the exception of a few minor details. Even though Fey’s last full-length features which included “Date Night” and “Megamind” were released back in 2010, she still has been very busy. She has been involved in the continued success of “30 Rock” and will be hosting this year’s Golden Globes. »

As Tom Lehrer once said, ‘Spring is here, suffering is here.’ Never has that been more evident than with the release of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium, the tragic tale of a mother and daughter who live a life of violence and terror in a run-down seaside town. Mainly because they’re vampires. Yes, this is Jordan’s return to Der Vampir after his 1994 smash Interview With The Vampire. However, unlike that bodice-ripping romp, Byzantium is a much more sombre affair and early reviews haven’t been kind. But with a stellar cast including Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan, Johnny Lee Miller and Sam Riley, plus the ever reliable Jordan running the show, »
