Box Office: Scarlett Johansson's 'Lucy' beats The Rock's 'Hercules' for no. 1

27 July 2014 9:54 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Strangely timed considering San Diego Comic-Con was in full swing, Scarlett Johansson scored the biggest non-Marvel opening of her career as "Lucy" debuted to an estimated $44 million to top the box office.  With a production budget of $40 million, Luc Besson's Sci-Fi thriller could be a strong performer for both the director's own financing company, Europa, and distributor Universal Pictures. The success of "Lucy," which had a huge $17.1 million opening day means Johansson has a legitimate career as an action star outside of her Black Widow Marvel Universe persona.  Whether she decides to explore that remains to be seen. Up until now her biggest opener, outside of Marvel, was the ensemble romantic comedy "He's Just Not that Into You" which earned $27.7 million in 2009.  Summer movie season is never easy and "Lucy" will face some stiff competition on Friday when Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" hits theaters. Another film that will »

26 May 2014 12:18 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The mutants ruled the multiplex over Memorial Day weekend. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" shot to the top of the box-office heap over the holiday, bringing in $91.4 million Friday-Sunday and an estimated $111 million Friday-Monday in over 4,000 locations, making it the second-largest opening of any "X-Men" film behind only "X-Men: The Last Stand." That Brett Ratner-directed threequel brought in $102.8 million over Memorial Day weekend 2006 (and $122.8 million over all four days). Among more recent entries in the "X-Men" franchise, "Days of Future Past" was a vast improvement on 2011's "X-Men: First Class" ($55.1 million opening) as well as last summer's "The Wolverine" ($53.1 million), while among Memorial Day weekend openers it ranks fifth of all-time behind 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The World's End," 2008's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "X-Men: The Last Stand" and last summer's "Fast & Furious 6." As compared with other superhero entries this year, "Days »

Nick Offerman & Mary Steenburgen Taking 'A Walk in the Woods'

15 May 2014 2:07 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

With Nick Nolte and Robert Redford teaming up for the adaptation of Bill Bryson's memoir A Walk in the Woods we were already pretty excited. Then the addition of Borat director Larry Charles sweetened the deal even more. However, a new report from Deadline reports He's Just Not That Into You and "The Office" director Ken Kwapis will be at the helm, so we're a little less interested. But with that news also comes the addition of Nick Offerman ("Parks & Recreation"), Kristen Schaal ("Bob's Burgers"), Emma Thompson and Mary Steenburgen in the supporting cast, though we're not sure who they're playing. For those who don't know, Redford is playing Bill Bryson, an aging travel writer an Iowa native who has been living in England for 20 years, as he aims to reconnect with America by hiking the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail. But his connection with the homeland isn't smooth as he »
