Since I would normally go out to meet people, it is infrequently that I find myself "staying in" to watch a movie with more than one other person, although it does happen. With any mixed group you will have such differences in terms of taste and moods that it is hard to get a film that everyone wants to see hence you often end up with a "safe" choice being made of a blockbuster film or something that is equally generic enough to be able to provide minimum offence to those that hate it, even if that comes at the expense of the group as nobody will really love it either. This preamble has a vague point because this was how I ended up watching this film. After 5 minutes of "seen it", "don't want to see it" on the on-demand screen, the decision was taken and, since my mild-OCD means I try to watch every film that comes my way, I figured it wouldn't hurt even though the only person I know who had seen it had told me only a week earlier than it was awful.
He was wrong as it turns out because HJNTIY is not awful it is just entirely forgettable fluff that never really does anything beyond the basics. It didn't have to be that way though because although it is built on modern relationship clichés, there is an element of truth to all of them and anyone with even a passing involvement in modern dating will find characters or situations that they can relate to. The problem comes when one expects the film to do something with that base, because it really doesn't do much. I expected to care about the characters but the film never really develops any of them or their situations beyond the level of cliché sketched out in pencil. It doesn't even really have anything of value to say about these modern "problems" either beyond letting them play out on a basic level and/or copping out just to bring things to an inoffensive and safe conclusion. In fairness though, the film didn't have to go that way because it could also have worked if it had worked on staying superficial by being fun, playful, light and refreshing about the whole thing. As you will have guessed already, it didn't do that either because the whole thing is lacking in real wit or invention as it moves along providing far too few laughs or good moments to be considered to work on that level.
It is a shame because it leaves the whole thing feeling like an big shrug of a film, with nothing awful about it but just a complete unwillingness to do anything of specific interest good or bad. The real work that should have gone into the content appears to have gone into the casting because this is a film that not only has a lot of star names in it but it is one that does almost nothing to justify having them in there. OK so some will question the quality of some of the cast but regardless it is a starry film. Of course the film gives them little to do but mostly the lack of substance kinda plays into the range of some of the cast by allowing them to turn in equally so-so, light performances. Goodwin is likable and fun in her role and it is a shame that the material took her a path she couldn't do much with at the end. She works well with Long though and he is also reasonably OK. Cooper and Connelly both have harder jobs to do in regards the more serious aspects of the plot but they do not manage to do better than the material gives them. Usually Johansson fails to impress because she comes over as superficial but here it is a strength and she is actually pretty good because the material plays to her strengths. Aniston, Affleck and Barrymore are all fairly so-so, with Barrymore being the weakest mainly due to her material being weak to the point of being unnecessary.
Overall HJNTIY is more or less what it appears to be a bland but yet inoffensive film that is superficial in every regard and appears to be totally fine with it. Nobody appears to want more depth than it offers and nobody appears to want to break the "safe" level of cosy entertainment by doing anything too funny, upsetting or challenging. Of course this is why many people seem to enjoy the film but for me it was so pointless that I had practically forgotten it even as it was still on.
