Storyline

"NFL MVP....did somebody say MVP?" So noted the tag-line that summarized the showdown between the New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers in the 2006 AFC Divisional Playoffs. The Patriots, seeking a fourth Superbowl, traveled to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego to face the Chargers, owning the 2006 season's best record at 14-2 and led by the National Football League's Most Valuable Player in running back LaDanian Tomlinson. With model Gisele Bundchen among other celebrities in attendance, the Patriots faced a very physical Chargers team that was considered more talented up and down its roster, but led by head coach Marty Schottenheimer, a coach with only five wins in twelve previous playoff appearances. The game quickly lived up to its billing as a defensive struggle, but the running of LaDanian Tomlinson helped the Chargers surge to a 14-3 lead before a late first-half Patriots touchdown drive kept the score at 14-10.
