When a small plane lands near their prison work detail, convicted murderer James Packer convinces young Billy Belmont (a licensed pilot) to steal the plane and fly both of them to the ranch owned by the young man's family. Warden Osgood immediately notifies Dan Mathews of the escape and Dan orders the Highway Patrol helicopter into action to assist with the search. The stolen plane is forced to crash-land in a remote area when it runs out of fuel. Belmont wants to surrender, but Packer finds a gun in the plane and forces Belmont to stick with him. When they spot the Highway Patrol helicopter, they panic and Packer forces an old prospector to allow them to hide inside his mine. The old man manages to let Dan know that the two are hiding in the mine, and Dan utilizes a ruse to surprise Packer as part of an attempt to capture the two without bloodshed. Written by Sam Spear
