Improvised drama True Love premiered on BBC One with a decent audience last night (Sunday, June 17), according to overnight data. Starring David Tennant, the five-part mini-series enthralled 3.11m (18.1%) at 10.25pm, topping the channel's usual average for its late slot. Despite facing live football on ITV, BBC One held up well with Countryfile (4.95m/25.3%), Antiques Roadshow (5.06m/21.2%) and The Inspector Lynley Mysteries (4.12m/16%). Euro 2012's clash between Portugal and Holland scored 6.92m (28%) between 7.15pm and 10pm for ITV1. Before that, Emmerdale logged 4.03m (20.3%) in an unusual slot of 6.45pm, adding 236k (1.1%) on +1. Holby City has announced the addition of three new regular characters who will debut in May 2012. The BBC One show will first introduce the "charmingly candid and utterly professional" consultant general surgeon Serena Campbell, played by Catherine Russell (The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Pete versus Life). Next to join the drama is "cocky and roguish" nurse and transplant coordinator Jonny Maconie (Michael Thomson), who "has no qualms about telling a few white lies to stir up some mischief". Just as one mysterious character departs, another enters as Merlin welcomes its newest addition – Agravaine, chief adviser to the King. Played by acclaimed actor Nathaniel Parker, the character provides yet another potential snake in Camelot’s grass for Arthur and Merlin as they fend off Morgana’s attack in the epic conclusion of the season-opening, two-part episode entitled “The Darkest Hour, Part 2.” The episode premieres this Friday, January 6 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on Syfy.
The magic of Merlin continues to cast a spell over audiences: Last Friday’s fourth-season premiere of Merlin attracted the biggest-ever first-episode audience in its Syfy history, with viewership 29% higher for Season 4 than Season 3. Episodes from all three previous seasons are available on iTunes, and Season 3 will be released January 17 on DVD.
