Trejo talks Machete

31 December 2009 9:31 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Even though it's coming out in April, MacHete was an idea that came out of the 90's. Danny Trejo spoke on it's origin, "Everybody thinks that Machete came out of a trailer, but it didn't. .Robert told me that he wanted to do this movie called Machete when we were doing Desperado. If you look at the character in Machete, it is a metamorphosis. He kind of moulded this character of Machete. I think it's gonna be one of his best. Rodriguez and Trejo talk up Machete

31 December 2009 7:58 AM, PST | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

It’s been a long time coming for Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo’s Machete, first glimpsed as a faux trailer in movie double-whammy Grindhouse. But only now, mere months before its Stateside release in April, are we learning just how far back Rodriguez’s plans for a Trejo-starring mash-up stretch. Speaking to IGN during a Predators set visit, Trejo revealed that Machete is actually very much a child of the ‘90s. “Everybody thinks that Machete came out of a trailer, but it didn't,” Trejo...

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »

Slackery News Tidbits, December 23

23 December 2009 10:30 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

'Twas the day before the night before Christmas, and all through the town ... oh, never mind. I'm lousy at those kinds of parodies. What I'm trying to say is that Austin has a rather surprising quantity of film news this week. Let's see what we've got for today:

Fantastic Fest 2010 is now accepting submissions for short and feature films. Let's get lots of local films in the running (and hopefully in the lineup)!Next year The Domain will open a gift that keeps on giving -- a new movie theater. The La Times has a story about the upscale Gold Class Cinema chain, which has only a few locations so far. Will Austinites shell out nearly $30 for a first-run movie ticket plus extra cash for fancy food, or will we stick with lower prices and food options at local Alamo Drafthouse theaters? Maybe the new theater will attract Domain regulars as opposed to film geeks. »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

More 'Machete'? Rodriguez, Trejo Talk Sequels

21 December 2009 4:48 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

From extremely humble beginnings, Machete may turn into a franchise for Danny Trejo and co-director/producer/creator Robert Rodriguez. The first feature-length film will be released next April, apparently, and already there is talk of not just one but two sequels.

"Well, Robert had been training me...god, that sounds really silly...for Machete since we did Desperado, Trejo says in a new article at MovieWeb. Everybody thinks that Machete came out of a trailer, but it didn't," explained Trejo. "Robert told me that he wanted to do this movie called Machete when we were doing Desperado."

"It is a culmination of Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and there's even a little bit of From Dusk Till Dawn in there. I think it's going to be one of his (Rodriguez') best and I'm not just saying that because I'm the lead, it's just a great movie."

Robert Rodriguez Update: Sin City 2, Machete & More

21 December 2009 8:25 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Collider recently spoke with director Robert Rodriguez, as well as his regular cast member Danny Trejo, on the set of Predators, where they were asked about the different projects Rodriguez has in the pipeline. The main ones talked about were the two of most interest to fans right now - Sin City 2 and Machete. But if you’re interested, there’s also some stuff in there about another Spy Kids movie.

Sin City 2

With the amount of vagueness (”It’s happening… maybe… at some point!”) surrounding the much-anticipated Sin City 2, it’s almost gotten to the point where no matter what Rodriguez or anyone else says, it’s hard to believe it’s ever going to happen. Despite that, earlier this year we reported that Sin City 2 was moving forward, with Rodriguez apparently having spoke with “key players” involved. We even got a “semi-confirmation” from exec producer, »

Robert Rodriguez Talks ‘Machete’, ‘Sin City 2′

21 December 2009 7:34 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Robert Rodriguez, a filmmaker I have a lot of respect for but am becoming more and more disappointed in as he sinks more of his time into schlocky 3D kids movies, recently gave up a lot of details regarding plans for sequels to Machete, Sin City 2 and Spy Kids 4 while on the set of Nimrod Antal’s Predators in Texas.

Here’s a breakdown of the details, with some commentary:

Machete Sequels:

“We always talked about making him a franchise character. Danny and I talked about it in ‘94…maybe Desperado that’s when I first mentioned the Machete character. So imagine that…he’s been bugging me since ‘94.

We want Machete, Machete Kills, and Machete Kills Again. [Laughter] That’s mine and Robert’s standards, you know? Every time I text him, he’ll text me back, Machete 2, coming up. [Laughs]“

So there’s a solid “maybe.” I could personally »

Danny Trejo Explains Machete's Origins

21 December 2009 7:06 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Many people think that the idea behind making Robert Rodriguez's upcoming Machete came from its inclusion as a faux-trailer in the Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse. However, Danny Trejo told ComingSoon that in fact the movie evolved from many years of planning.

Everybody thinks that Machete came out of a trailer, but it didn't. Robert told me he wanted to do this movie called Machete when we were doing Desperado and that if you look at the character in Machete, he kind of molded this character Machete ... Machete kicks a**. [laughs] It is a culmination of Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico ... I think there's even a little bit of From Dusk Till Dawn in there.

I think it's going to be one of his best. I'm not just saying that 'cause I'm the lead in it, but it's just a great movie. I think everybody's going to »

Danny Trejo Talks 'Machete'

21 December 2009 6:54 AM, PST | AMC - Script to Screen | See recent AMC - Script to Screen news »

Recently LatinoReview  got to visit the set of "Predators," which actor Danny Trejo is in and spoke to the site about his first lead role in "Machete," the faux trailer from "Grindhouse." The film is being co-directed by Robert Rodriguez with protege Ethan Maniquis.

The film follows the highly skilled Federale Machete who is hired by some unsavory types to assassinate a senator. But just as he's about to take the shot, he notices someone aiming at him and realizes he's been set up. He barely survives the sniper's bullet, and is soon out for revenge on his former employers, with the reluctant assistance of his old friend (Marin), who has become a priest and taken a vow of nonviolence.

Here is what he had to say about his upcoming film "Machete":

Robert put together such a great cast. What’s it like working with Robert De Niro, and then Steven Seagal, »

Robert Rodriguez Sequel Log-Jam: More Machete, Sin City 2 and Spy Kids Reboot

21 December 2009 4:32 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This story will eventually get along to news of a potential original film from Robert Rodriguez but first of all, we need to tidy up a lot of loose ends regarding his ever mounting pile of in-the-works sequels. He's a franchisomaniac. All of this info comes from the fact that a number of online press were last week invited down to the set of Predators and they duly squeezed Rodriguez for all they could. We'll take it one franchise at a time. Here's the man on future Machete movies: We always talked about making him a franchise character. Danny and I talked about it in ‘94…maybe Desperado that’s when I first mentioned the Machete character. So imagine that…he’s been bugging me since ‘94. Add into the mix a bit of light, hype-building and pot-stirring by Machete himself, Danny Trejo: We want Machete, Machete Kills, and Machete Kills Again. »

Robert Rodriguez "Can't Say No" to Sin City 2

21 December 2009 2:42 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Talk of a Sin City sequel began almost immediately after the movie opened. Having earned nearly quadruple what it cost to make, and with plenty more Sin City stories by creator Frank Miller to draw on, a sequel almost seemed inevitable.

Actor Clive Owen dropped some encouraging news back in September when he said that a "good source" informed him that Sin City 2 could begin filming as early as next year. Now, in a recent interview, director Robert Rodriguez said that he might be directing the sequel in the near future.

I know Frank wants to do it, I know I wanna do it, and its always sort of [a] time-permitting kind of thing, but it's not like I can tell you definitely we're starting ... it's not my next picture ... I know that. Doesn't mean that it's not the picture right after [that] because that's still a possibility.

Robert Rodriguez's Updates on Sin City 2 & Machete Trilogy

20 December 2009 11:57 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Last week, a small handful of websites were invited to the set of Robert Rodriguez's Predators down in Austin, TX (we sadly weren't included). While there, they talked with Robert Rodriguez about all of the projects he currently has in the works, from Spy Kids to Sin City 2 to Machete. He doesn't really say much, but does give some informative and possibly even amusing updates on Sin City 2 and Machete though, so I'm focusing on those. You can find a complete rundown of everything on Collider or RopeofSilicon if you're curious about Spy Kids or any other upcoming projects. And with that, let's see what Rodriguez had to say. Before we get to Machete, let's start with Sin City. Rodriguez was asked if he's still planning on making the sequel one day and his answer was the same as before: "Yeah we still talk about doing that »

Machete X: Machete in Space

Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo are truly having with fun their upcoming film MacHete, which is being released next April. No MacHete X: MacHete In Space isn't an upcoming sequel title for the series but Rodriguez and Trejo did have fun with possible franchise sequel names including a tongue in cheek reference to a Machete in Space title. We also learn that the film may have some From Dusk Till Dawn elements...

Chris Eggertsen, during a set visit to the new film Predators directed by Nimrod Antal and currently filming at Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas, had the chance to catch up with Robert Rodriguez (who is producing the film) and Danny Trejo (one of the stars) to chat about the 70's esq Grindhouse feature Machete. Trejo gave us a little more background on the project, which actually was an idea Rodriguez had back in the early days of their collaboration. »
