Steven Seagal Has Been Banned from Ukraine and Labeled a Threat to National Security

6 May 2017 10:33 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In the immortal words of CineFile Video, Steven Seagal is hard to kill but easy to love. Ukraine apparently disagrees, as the action star, energy-drink entrepreneur and Russian citizen has been labeled a national-security threat and banned from the country for five years. Other cultural figures have likewise been declared personae non gratae after they have “committed socially dangerous actions … that contradict the interests of maintaining Ukraine’s security,” according to a letter published by Apostrophe (via the Guardian).

Read More: The 6 Least Inessential Steven Seagal Movies

Seagal, whose work in “Under Siege” rivals Jean-Claude Van Damme’s in “Bloodsport,” has called Russia’s decision to annex Crimea “very reasonable” and is a well-known supporter of Vladimir Putin. That obviously doesn’t sit well with Ukraine, who in 2015 included the actor on a proposed blacklist of cultural figures who “speak out in support of violating the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. »

Danny Trejo Posts His "Lost" 'Star Wars' Audition Tape

4 May 2017 12:52 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Nailed it.

Danny Trejo on Thursday got in on the fun of everyone else celebrating Star Wars Day by posting his "lost" Star Wars audition tape.

The actor has played a badass in numerous films, including Heat, Con Air, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn and Machete, among others, but it seems he was going for a softer role when he "auditioned" for A New Hope.

In the short clip, Trejo, wearing Princess Leia buns, delivers the classic line, "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope."

Almost as soon as the line is out, Trejo cracks up laughing.

‘Blood Drive’ Trailer: Syfy’s New Exploitation Series Looks Like an Assault on the Senses

30 April 2017 11:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This month marked the tenth anniversary of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, an experiment the directors intended to replicate the experience of visiting a 1970s-style grindhouse theater. Although three spin-off movies have been made based on the fake trailers included in the presentation (Machete, Machete Kills, and Hobo with a Shotgun), Grindhouse flopped at the box office. […]

Tribeca: Barbra Streisand Reflects on Acting Career, Directing Struggles

29 April 2017 6:29 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

On Saturday evening in Manhattan, Barbra Streisand sat down with director Robert Rodriguez during Tribeca Film Festival 2017. Anyone confused as to why the stage/screen/singing icon was paired with the gore-loving director had that mystery cleared up less than one minute into the into the Tribeca Talks: Storytellers event by the Machete director himself.

"A lot of you are probably wondering why I'm here," said Rodriguez to the crowd. Apparently, his Streisand fandom dates back to his boyhood, growing up in a 10-child household in San Antonio, Texas. "In our household, there was no bigger star than Barbra Streisand," he »

From Angelina Jolie to Daisy Ridley, Here’s the Top 14 Female Action Stars Working Today

4 April 2017 4:12 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Way back in 1979, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” brought us our first genuine female action hero in Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Despite the three sequels that followed, Ripley proved to be something of an outlier. Until fairly recently, a woman could kill someone in a movie only if she faced brutal punishment afterward, as in Scott’s “Thelma and Louise,” or in the inevitable fates of Bond girls: They could dole out lethal action, but rarely survived.

Today, ass-kicking women are no longer an anomaly or subject to automatic retribution. This weekend, we watched Scarlett Johansson lay waste to her enemies (although not the box office) in “Ghost in the Shell,” following a path blazed by the likes of Linda Hamilton (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”), Uma Thurman (“Kill Bill”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). These roles may strike a blow for equality and diversity, but what these women — and »

Robert Rodriguez To Direct Animated Feature Ugly Dolls

28 March 2017 2:30 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Robert Rodriguez has an intriguingly split career. On one hand, he’s notorious for his balls-to-the-wall grindhouse capers like Desperado, Sin City and Machete. On the other, he’s made bank with the Spy Kids trilogy, popular children’s films released in the early 2000s. Lately, he’s been tending towards the more bloody end of the spectrum, but perhaps he’s swinging back towards family friendly, as it’s just been announced that he’s to direct Ugly Dolls.

Ugly Dolls (or Uglydolls) are cute little stuffed toys who’ve snowballed in popularity since their introduction in 2001, with Babo, Cinko, Ice Bat and the rest making appearances in the backgrounds of Enchanted, The It Crowd and Zathura – not to mention famously being spotted fixed to Sasha Obama’s backpack on her first day of school in 2009. They come from the ‘uglyverse’ where the ethos is that ‘ugly’ is something »

Robert Rodriguez Eyed As Director Of Escape From New York Remake

24 March 2017 5:55 PM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

A few years back, the Hollywood Remake Machine set its eyes on another classic property, with a remake of John Carpenter’s dystopian classic Escape From New York finding itself passed around by quite a few studios before finally finding a home with 20th Century Fox in 2015, filling some people with quite a bit of confidence since they’ve had great success revising a dead franchise with Planet of the Apes. It’s being all quiet on the Snake Plissken front since then, but now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the studio is looking at Sin City and Machete’s Robert Rodriguez to helm the reboot. Carpenter will still be involved, singing on as executive producer. While remakes of similar classics, such as Total Recall and Robocop, have been pretty disappointing, the fact that they are considering a director who thinks as far out of the box as Rodriguez »

SXSW 2017 Interview: Writer / Director Aaron Burns Discusses the Parental Horrors of Madre

15 March 2017 1:49 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

While Madre may only be his second feature film to date, writer/director Aaron Burns is no stranger to the world of horror, or indie filmmaking for that matter. His credits include providing visual effects expertise on projects like Planet Terror, Machete, and The Green Inferno (on which he also was in charge of second unit photography and even played the character of Jonah, who was eaten by cannibals in a glorious frenzy of brutality), and he has also worked as a camera operator on Aftershock and played supporting roles in both The Stranger and Knock Knock.

While at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead caught up with Burns to talk about his disturbing take on parental paranoia. The filmmaker discussed what inspired his latest project, how he wanted to tap into the true horror of Madre’s story—rather than rely on copious amounts of gore—and the importance of trusting female instincts, »

Michelle Rodriguez Secretly Joined Alita: Battle Angel

Production has been under way on the highly-anticipated Alita: Battle Angel for the past few months, with filming coming to an end last week. While a number of cast members were announced last year, there is one mystery role that hasn't been announced until today, with Michelle Rodriguez being cast as Gelda from the original manga by Yukito Kishiro. It remains to be seen how faithful this movie version of Gelda is to the source material, but in the original manga, Gelda was described as a "slim cyborg warrior."

Entertainment Weekly broke the news, although it remains unclear if there are other mystery characters that haven't been announced at this time. Michelle Rodriguez joins a cast that includes Rosa Salazar as the title character, alongside Christoph Waltz, Eiza Gonzalez, Jackie Earle Haley, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jennifer Connolly and Lana Condor. James Cameron Names Zack Snyder, Robert Rodriguez, & Tim Miller As Inspirations

20 February 2017 10:31 AM, PST | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Without a doubt, James Cameron is one of the most influential voices in film today (perhaps even in history). Sure, the guy tends to make one film a decade, but when he does actually release a movie, they, without fail, go one to become cultural phenomenons. Terminator 2, Titanic, Avatar -- these are all movies that have defined generations, and they’re movies that continue on as staples of their respective genres.

Of course, creativity doesn’t happen by accident, and it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Creativity feeds creativity, and like any creative person, James Cameron survives on a healthy diet of other people’s works. But on whose works is Cameron actually feeding? Speaking with Megat Danial, Cameron shared that very thing.

“Directors that continue to inspire me…Ridley Scott. I mean, I’ll go to any Ridley Scott movie, even the ones that bomb, to me, are great, »

Matt Edwards Feb 24, 2017

We check out every Steven Seagal film released last year. There were quite a few of them...

2016 was an eventful year for Steven Seagal. The action movie star really took to Twitter, got political, wore some lovely coats and was granted Russian citizenship. But we aren’t here to dissect Steven Seagal’s off-screen life because, well, fuck. What we can do is try to make some sense of his cinematic output. This article will tell you a bit about the Seagal films released in 2016 (it’s full on with spoilers) to let you know how he got on.

With films getting different releases in different territories, I’ve covered every Seagal film with a home video release in 2016 that I might reasonably be expected to have access to. That’s five in total. In the UK, we had a bumper Seagal summer, »
