"And I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy." ― F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Great Gatsby"
Greetings from the apocalypse! This is an exciting week for me, since I'm making my art gallery debut and all — I'm celebrating with two docs covering cool artistic subcultures (gig posters and tattooing), as well as a hella ton of Mother's Day recommends. Let's get to it, shall we, old sport? Yep yep.

Glam filmmaker Baz Luhrmann's reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald's timeless Jazz-age romance "The Great Gatsby" looks like my 11th grade book report had sex with a disco ball, but that's par for the course. Luhrmann had previously razzle-dazzled "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" and reunites with Leonardo DiCaprio as enigmatic rich dude Jay Gatsby, clinging to the memory of a past dalliance with Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). A year has passed, and another Texas Frightmare Weekend has come and gone! Last year Tfw expanded dramatically with a much larger location to become the Southwest's premier horror con. This year they proved that isn't going to change anytime soon.
This con is so hot that guests have begun just showing up without an invite. Veteran character actor Glenn Morshower ("Millennium", The Crazies 2010) popped up on Friday and was set up in the lobby until Saturday, when a table was located for him in the main room. He was swamped all weekend so it's a good thing he came!
The focus of the con (which ran May 3rd-5th) was originally "The Walking Dead," but with a few cancellations (almost all replaced with other guests, some from "Twd"), the star of the Weekend became Danny "Machete" Trejo, who was mobbed every time he was at his table. The presence »

Nobody ever expected the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez experiment known as Grindhouse (aka "Death Proof" / "Planet Terror") to spawn a resurgence in the popularity of the grungy exploitation flicks of the 1970s -- which makes sense, because it didn't. But one thing Grindhouse did accomplish was to point out that there was still a small but loyal audience for garish genre flicks that combine modern filmmaking tricks with cheesy old '70s nostalgia.
Grindhouse led to films like Machete and Hobo With a Shotgun, and now those films have inspired a few more indie lunatics to try their hand at exploitation homage. Not all of them are successful, but the five-man Canadian team known as Astron-6 has pulled off something pretty cool... even if it's the sort of "cool" that only 5% of the movie buff audience will appreciate. Equal parts lurid shocker with outrageous gore and sly satire with an »

There are times you feel as if Swinton has made it her mission to eradicate all traces of natural provenance. She's achieved an almost clone-like physical presence: an ageless, androgynous, translucent-skinned human blank, ready to be moulded into whatever role she's assigned. And boy does she get through them. She's been everything from a distressed housewife to the Angel Gabriel; corporate lawyer to Narnian ice queen. But in personality terms, she's the complete opposite of a blank. Malleable though she may be, Swinton has ironically become her own trademark. »

Stallone has spent the last month free-associating about The Expendables 3 on his Twitter account, promising mountains of surprises and more humor, saying in no uncertain terms that Steven Seagal will not be involved but that Jackie Chan has a spot saved on the roster, and also putting out a casual casting call for a “tech wizard, »
