Storyline

PORTRAIT OF AMERICA was a five-year, $20 million investment originated by Ted Turner, who believed original programming was the key to the growth of cable television. He also created CNN for the same reason. POA consisted of 55 one-hour original documentaries about every state and territory in the USA (with two episodes about California, one about New York City, one about Washington DC, and one about island territories) -- all shot on film by leading documentary filmmakers, with original music scores, all hosted and narrated by Hal Holbrook (who won a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on the "Alaska" episode), and all aired in prime time on TBS, Turner's "SuperStation.". The series also won a Peabody Award and several Cable ACE Awards. Written by William Sweney

Great Loss
12 July 2010 | by See all my reviews

This was a series that took each state and gave you history beyond what you might have learned in school. I know my own state of ND had all kinds of useful history that explained how the towns were set up to be turned over to immigrants from other countries to homestead. That wasn't all that new of information, but the process they used to do it was, and who had the influence to shape such things was also new to me. That was just my state. All of the states I had seen (probably only five or six) had some really great information that was done in such an excellent way that it's a great loss it has basically disappeared. Hopefully someone will revise this at some point for sale....
