Weekend Report: 'Exodus' is Weak 'King'

14 December 2014 12:01 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Exodus: Gods and Kings missed the mark this weekend, though it still easily ruled over another very quiet weekend at the box office.Meanwhile, Chris Rock's Top Five got off to a decent start, and Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice did big business at a few theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The Top 12 earned $76.7 million, which makes this one of the slowest weekends of the year. Business will pick up next weekend, though it does look like this will be one of the worst Decembers in recent memory.Playing at 3,503 locations, Exodus: Gods and Kings opened to an estimated $24.1 million this weekend. That doesn't compare favorably to this year's previous Biblical movies, as its nearly $20 million lower than Noah's debut and roughly on par with the much-less-expensive Son of God.That's not really an apples-to-apples comparison, though, as opening weekends in December are historically muted. 'Exodus' Rules Friday Box Office with $8.6 Million

13 December 2014 9:00 AM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings easily took first place on another quiet Friday at the box office.Playing at 3,503 locations, Exodus opened to an estimated $8.6 million yesterday. That's significantly lower than Noah's $15.2 million debut, though the gap is due in part to the December release (when there's less of a rush on opening weekend). The opening is at least on par with past December releases The Golden Compass ($8.7 million) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader ($8.3 million). For the weekend, Exodus is poised to earn between $23 and $25 million. After leading the box office for the past three weeks, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 dropped to second place on Friday. The movie eased 43 percent*another strong hold*to $3.79 million, which brings its total to $269 million. Look for it to earn at least $12 million over the three-day frame.Opening at 979 theaters, Chris Rock's Top Five »

The Christmas movie season kicks off this weekend with Exodus: Gods and Kings, which will easily take first place away from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.Meanwhile, Chris Rock's Top Five opens at 979 theaters and Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice debuts at five locations in New York and Los Angeles.Playing at 3,503 theaters this weekend, Exodus: Gods and Kings is director Ridley Scott's big-budget retelling of the story of Exodus, which plays a significant role in most major religions (Moses is a prophet in Christianity, Judaism and Islam). The story has also been previously told on the big screen a handful of times: the most notable version is Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments, which was initially released in 1956 and starred Charleton Heston and Yul Brenner.Scott's version features Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Ramses; Bale has built up a solid following over the past decade, »

Michael Apted Turns to Crowdfunding for ‘Married in America 3′

19 September 2014 12:11 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Michael Apted is launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for the third installment of his “Married in America” series.

“Married in America” chronicled the journeys of nine diverse couples wed in 2001 — using a format similar to Apted’s “7 Up” series. A&E aired the first segment in 2002 and Hallmark broadcast the second in 2007.

“I made the films because I’m fascinated by relationships and what makes them work,” Apted said. “I also wanted to look at how marriage is changing in the early 21st century — more women becoming the major breadwinners, both spouses working full-time, bi-racial and interfaith marriages increasing, and same-sex marriages becoming more accepted.”

Apted’s “Up” series, produced by Granada Television, has followed the lives of 14 British children, starting when they were 7 years old. The most recent segment, “56 Up,” aired in 2012 on ITV.

Close to Chaos: All your favourite dystopian movies in one supercut

19 September 2014 10:05 AM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

With the recent trend of female-led dystopian films based on Young Adult novels doing so well at the box office –like The Hunger Games and Divergent – it was only a matter of time before the boys jumped onto the bandwagon.

The Maze Runner's Dylan O’Brien (“Teen Wolf”), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love Actually, “Game of Thrones”) and Will Poulter (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) join JLaw and Shailene as the newest teenaged heroes to bring down a corrupt system – or at least try to.

Overriding the system isn’t just a game for the under-25 set, however. Dystopian films have embraced the idea of rebellion for decades, churning out classics like The Matrix and The Terminator. In recent years, movies like Looper,V for VendettaI Am Legend, and Snowpiercer have won over audiences and critics alike.

The Academy Invites 271 New Members for 2014

26 June 2014 12:44 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o among 271 Academy invitees

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years. »

Josh Hutcherson, Lupita Nyong'o, Pharrell and 268 others invited to join the Academy

26 June 2014 11:50 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn. »

Father and son combine on Australian drama

For the best part of 20 years Chris Blackburn tried his hand at writing film scripts, a sideline to his day jobs as a newspaper and TV reporter, reality show producer and, currently, as a co-executive producer on Big Brother.

Eighteen months ago he had an idea for a crime drama about a young man whose sister has been brutally murdered, set primarily in a row of vacant houses near his home on the north coast of Nsw.

Blackburn wrote the script and asked his son Tim, a TV editor who has directed several short films to direct. Entitled Burns Point, the film is now in day seven of a 21-day shoot in and around the town of Ballina.

Asked how he.s financed the film, Chris tells If, .It.s mostly me. I.ve saved up for this and put money aside." Cast and crew are working on deferred. fees in some cases. »
