4.4 Hang The DJ

However merry a path a Black Mirror episode seems to be wending, its audience has been taught to brace for impact. Show us a fragrant young couple hitting it off and we dutifully await the revelation that we’re really watching a suicide pact/eternal torture session/poignant vision of the afterlife reminding us that we, our loved ones and our hopes and dreams are slowly dying too.

Not here. With its menacing taser-armed guards and talk of feeling “like a prisoner”, Hang The DJ hints towards a dark secret, but in fact is all rather sweet.

Interview, Audio: Michael Stuhlbarg in ‘Call Me By Your Name’

Chicago – The character actor Michael Stuhlbarg is one of the more complete players in today’s show business. His embrace of a role is absolute, and his characters ring with a particular poetry based on his interpretations. His latest role is of an academic and father in the new film, “Call Me By Your Name.”

“Call Me…” is a sensitive and authentic literary adaptation that tells of summer romance between an older grad student (Armie Hammer) – under the tutelage of Professor Perlman (Stuhlbarg) – and the professor’s curious son Elio (Timothée Chalamet). Stuhlbarg’s role is one of commentator throughout the film, until a climatic monologue that assures his son that whatever is right for him is right for everybody. The film is a emotional alternative to the holiday blockbuster.

Michael Shannon on Kubrickian Inspiration, Sex as Storytelling, and Sidney Lumet

Bringing a defining presence to any project he takes part in, Michael Shannon exudes both a controlled menace and an emotional complexity in his wide range of roles, from his collaborations with Jeff Nichols to 99 Homes to superhero villains to his small-screen gangster drama Boardwalk Empire. Following his Oscar-nominated performance in last year’s Nocturnal Animals, he’s back on the circuit with Guillermo del Toro’s Cold War era fantasy tale The Shape of Water.

If one only viewed the trailer, it may be easy to label his character or Strickland as a villain, but, like many of his roles, Shannon carries a beating, humorous heart to this archetype as he wrestles with the pressures of bureaucracy and the discarded promises of the American dream. We spoke with the actor about getting room to breathe on set, being in del Toro’s world, the complications of sex, and working

‘The Post’: Steven Spielberg’s ‘Favorite Cast’ Has Received At Least 58 Emmy Nominations
Sometimes, even Steven Spielberg has trouble assembling his dream cast. But that wasn’t the case with his latest film, the historical drama “The Post.” At a Q&A on Monday night hosted by the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles, Spielberg told the audience that he’d been able to get every single one of his first choices. No small feat, considering that the turnaround time on the movie clocked in at just nine months, dating from Spielberg’s first acceptance of the script to its first November screenings.

“So often when I make a movie, I have my first choices, and I don’t always get my first choices sometimes due to availability or sometimes actors don’t like the script enough to say yes to me or to anybody,” he said. “But everybody I wanted in the movie, they were available and they all said yes.
