It's amazing how much this show is inspired by the 70s-80s horror flicks. The generated atmosphere is oddly similar. It's impressive how they manage to shoot unpredictable actual reality, having no possibility for rehearsals or second takes, & still giving it a sense of a scene from some vintage horror classic shot with contemporary hi-def cameras. I'd say that some of the special effects are quite revolutionary for a reality TV show in some sense, & all this is done in one single take. It is obvious that the several years experience on PUNK'D & BOILING POINTS serves well to the makers of this show & they actually take this prankomania to the more advanced & fresh level. Tecnologicaly the show is flawless as well as visually. Each single action, camera movement or a mini pyrotechnic fiesta is calculated precisely & executed with an extremely professional manner. The aspects of movie-making are brilliantly merged with those of a TV making & it works. It is well-written & well-realized.
But the most surprising thing is that this is not a comedy, some episdoes are not even funny at all. In contrary they are serious, dangerous & scary.
MTV still remains a holder of the biggest slice in my TV consuming pie & ROOM 401 shines as another cultural stimulant for the ever multicolor MTV generation.
