Director Tan Pin Pin describes Singapore Gaga as an "experiment", a "paean to the quirkiness of the Singaporean aural landscape". It is a 54-min video documentary on the sounds and music one can find amongst the people of present-day Singapore, ranging from - amongst others - puppeteer and ventriloquist Victor Khoo, toy pianist Margaret Leng Tan, harmonica player Yew Hong Chow, MRT tunnel busker Ying, Novena station guitarist and singer Melvyn, "the Voice of the MRT" Juanita Melson and many more. Singapore Gaga is strung together as vignettes about these people in their everyday lives, interacting with the sounds, music and voices of what they come to identify as their jobs. There is a poignant undertone as some of these people are shown to be somewhat marginalized by society, as in Victor Khoo's searching question to his puppet Charlee: "Why is it that you are never decorated during the National Day Parade?". There are many unexpected moments here, as in a (real time) performance of John Cage's 4'33" by Margaret Leng Tan. If you are Singaporean, you owe it to yourself to catch this.
