More Clips and Behind the Scenes Videos for Solomon Kane

30 December 2009 4:00 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

In the last few weeks since the last post on Michael J. Bassett's fantasy film Solomon Kane, a couple of new video contents has been moderately added to the official site.  This includes two clips, "Capture of Family" and "Castle Fight" and two behind-the-scenes featurette, "Creatures" and 'Fight Scenes", all conveniently placed together in a widget.

Solomon Kane is a 16th century anti-hero created by Robert E. Howard (creator of Conan the Barbarian). When Solomon Kane (James Purefoy of Rome) meets the Devil's Reaper, he postpones his fate by renouncing violence - a vow that is soon tested by the forces of evil. As Kane once again straps on his weapons, he embarks on an epic journey of redemption.

Written and directed by Michael J. Bassett, the film also stars Rachel Hurd-Wood, Pete Postlethwaite, Alice Krige, Mackenzie Crook, Jason Flemyng and Max von Sydow as Josiah Kane.

The Fights Of Solomon Kane: Behind The Scenes

30 December 2009 4:59 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Solomon Kane” is a movie I am really looking forward to. That particular era (16th Century England) is criminally underused and features an excellent hysterically paranoid culture, bug eyed in terror over witches and skirts that rose above the foot. I love the whole look and feel of the pilgrim time, full of ruffled shirts, pointy hats, floating or non floating witches and torches, torches, torches! Brilliant! Here we have a nice behind the scenes look at how the fighting scenes in “Solomon Kane” were put together plus someone gets turned into a newt! Just kidding. “Solomon Kane” opens wide in 2010 and stars James Purefoy. Via the creepy kids at Bloody Disgusting. »

Several New Clips for Solomon Kane, Plus Behind the Scenes Footage

29 December 2009 4:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I've been looking forward to Michael J. Bassett's Solomon Kane ever since we caught some glimpses of the sword and sorcery film back at Comic-Con. The film stars James Purefoy (Rome) as the titular Robert E. Howard (creator of Conan the Barbarian) character, and also includes Pete Postlethwaite and Max von Sydow among its cast. We haven't seen much from the project up until now, aside from a trailer several months ago. Today, the studio announced that they've released several clips from the film, including behind-the-scenes footage, in a convenient video widget. They've also included a higher quality version of the trailer, which definitely gives us a much better look at the scope of the film. The new clips feature a look at the fight scenes in the film, as well as the many fantasy creatures. Check them out below: While it may be independently produced, Solomon Kane honestly »

We still don't know when Solomon Kane's sword skills and swell hat will arrive in the Us, but in the meantime at least we're getting fed a steady diet of morsels from the movie. Bassett (Deathwatch), and we've some insight as to how that happened. Check out the featurettes below, and more clips Right Here. The movie stars »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

New Red Band Clip from 'Solomon Kane'

28 December 2009 8:13 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I've commented before on how much the filmmakers of Solomon Kane seem to be stretching their $40 million. Take, for example, King Arthur from 2004. Somehow, it cost three times as much as this movie even though from a visual standpoint, I can't see three times worth of difference. Even with the success of Avatar, I think over the next couple of years, you'll see studios and production companies pare down the size of budgets not just to make movies that are immediately more profitable but also to counteract a sluggish home video market, as well. It'll be a survival instinct.

But for Solomon Kane, it appears as though it's all up there on screen. The film has been in development for years and years, so some of that budgetary restraint might be due to spending more in the development phase than we might normally see. But now the Robert E. Howard »

'Avatar' wows 'em worldwide

27 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Avatar” surprised no one by taking the No. 1 spot on the foreign circuit for the second weekend in a row.

But director James Cameron’s mega-budget epic raised eyebrows with its overseas boxoffice staying power, grossing $145 million -- a mere 12% drop from its opening weekend -- from 14,844 screens. It did well in its second week in the U.S. as well.

Triple-digit opening grosses usually decline substantially in the ensuing weekend. A drop of less than 50% is considered positive by the industry. Distributor 20th Century Fox said “Avatar’s” relative miniscule decline “is even more impressive given theatre closures in many markets on Dec. 24 and/or Dec. 25.”

The film’s offshore cumulative total stands at $405 million. Worldwide tally clocks in at $617.3 million.

Not coincidentally, Fox reported yesterday that its 2009 overseas boxoffice take set a new industry record -- an estimated $2.263 billion, the highest of any Hollywood studio ever “with four more days to go. »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »
