The US military and political authorities see him as a threat however and decide to use so-called intensive interrogation techniques on him but Dr. Benson decides to facilitate his escape. 'Sidewinder' missiles are fired at GORT while in robot form and in insect form. AIM-9 Sidewinders are heat seeking, air-to-air missiles, targeting objects on the thermal scale of jet engines. There is no suggestion that GORT is emitting a heat signature on that scale in either of his forms, and they would not have been used when GORT is in his robot form, as he is on the ground. History has lessons to teach us about first encounters between civilizations. As a rule the less advanced civilization is either exterminated or enslaved. I'm thinking of Pizarro and the Incans, Columbus and the Native Americans, and the list goes on. Unfortunately in this case, the less advanced civilization is us.
This is the representative of an extra-terrestrial civilization. This is the most important discovery in the history of Mankind!
It may well be the last discovery in the history of ...

I did not think it was possible after Dakota's silverware dropping on the floor, high frequency torture that any child could be worse. Jaden Smith achieves the nadir: the worst performance by any child actor I have seen. See, you are supposed to feel sorry for him: now, if he is a defiant, arrogant, snotty, smirking, little brat it wrecks the movie. The movie is truly a legend: the worse ensemble ever assembled, canoe, Rocketeer girl, and even Bates gives a bad reading. She proved in Misery she is a great actress this shows you that the direction sucked. Canoe will show you the difference between acting like an alien versus acting like you had most of your brain removed: awful. The effects are stunning and if you can endure the worst acting since Skyline watch the movie. Hey, when John Cleese is the best actor in the movie you have a problem. The film has a couple things that are interesting. I love the accurate depiction of advanced technology and how powerless we would be to it. My favorite scene is where Klatu uses the laser targeting beams to send destroying energy up to the choppers: watch how he turns his back before they explode, that says,"You poor, pathetic monkey boys, your weapons are so sad."
He has such a look of sorrow on his face; this is exactly how it would be. No, he did not need a woman to drive him around in her Mustang like in Starman. Also, he is not in love with us; he doesn't tell us,"You are at your best when things are worst." I love when Bates says this is our planet and Klatu says,"No, it is not." A must see for Trekkies who think they are coming to bow down to us like in the Motionless Picture. The movie actually moves well, the effects are stunning. If you can endure Jaden, and believe me: brace yourself, it is worth one viewing but never buy it. The use of GORT is clever and well written: I love how he breaks into trillions of nanobots that wipe us out pronto. I adore the original, but please, how long would it have taken that GORT to kill everybody? That is what will press your pants, what this movie could have been. I agree with the great review above me: The greatest disappointment, you can see what the movie could have been.
It really is easy to repair, the writing and effects can be salvaged. The whole cast goes bye bye: starting with canoe, Rocketeer girl, and Jaden. Bates can stay, a good director could fix her reading. The movie is such a tragic train wreck of a remake. They thought Canoe could act impassive but he only knows vacant which is not impassive. Do not buy this movie!!
