I always look forward to both the BAFTA television and film awards, but the film awards are definitely my favourite ceremony, especially if I have seen the films nominated, so I can hope certain ones win. Hosted by Stephen Fry, 2004 saw some great films nominated and winning the famous golden mask award, in all the categories: Best Film, Best British Film, Best Leading Actor, Best Leading Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay, Best Music, the Fellowship award, Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Film not in the English Language, Best Makeup & Hair, Best Production Design, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, Best Short Film and Best Short Animation. Films nominated and winning in this year included: Belleville Rendez-Vous, Big Fish, Cold Mountain, Finding Nemo, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Good Bye Lenin!, Lost in Translation, Love Actually, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, The Mother, Mystic River, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Spirited Away, The Station Agent, Thirteen, Touching the Void and 21 Grams. It also included a tribute to all the filmmakers and stars who had passed away in the last year, including Charles Bronson and Bob Hope. Stars seen at the ceremony, and nominated or winning, included Pedro Almodóvar, Lord Sir Richard Attenborough, Paul Bettany, Helena Bonham Carter, Holly Hunter, Jason Isaacs, Scarlett Johansson, Val Kilmer, LL Cool J, Sir Ian McKellen, Joely Richardson, Miranda Richardson, Andy Serkis, Alicia Silverstone, Sir Patrick Stewart, Emma Thompson, Jon Voight, Naomi Watts and Renée Zellweger. Very good!
