Dysfunctional Heterosexual Couples and Oscar-Winning Cross-Gender Performance: TCM's Gay Pride Comes to an End

Dysfunctional Heterosexual Couples and Oscar-Winning Cross-Gender Performance: TCM's Gay Pride Comes to an End
Turner Classic Movies' 2017 Gay Pride film series comes to a close this evening and tomorrow morning, Thursday–Friday, June 29–30, with the presentation of seven movies, hosted by TV interviewer Dave Karger and author William J. Mann, whose books include Wisecracker: The Life and Times of William Haines and Behind the Screen: How Gays and Lesbians Shaped Hollywood, 1910-1969. Among tonight's movies' Lgbt connections: Edward Albee, Tony Richardson, Evelyn Waugh, Tab Hunter, John Gielgud, Roddy McDowall, Linda Hunt, Harvey Fierstein, Rudolf Nureyev, Christopher Isherwood, Joel Grey, and Tommy Kirk. Update: Coincidentally, TCM's final 2017 Gay Pride celebration turned out to be held the evening before a couple of international events – and one non-event – demonstrated that despite noticeable progress in the last three decades, gay rights, even in the so-called “West,” still have a long way to go. In Texas, the state's – all-Republican – Supreme Court decided that married gays should be treated as separate and unequal. In

Blu-ray Review: 'The Belles of St. Trinian's'

  • CineVue
★★★★☆Some films could only have been made in England, during a certain era and with a particular cast. The Belles of St. Trinian's (1954) - newly released by StudioCanal to mark its sixtieth anniversary - is one such film. Though its popularity led to a string of sequels throughout the 1950s and 60s - as well as an unfortunate revival in 2007 - it is the original film, directed by Frank Launder and starring Alistair Sim, George Cole and Joyce Grenfell, which remains the archetypal celluloid visualisation of artist Ronald Searle's comic creation. It's the new term at St. Trinian's - the girl's public school in the heart of England's home-counties, where anyone, other than the pupils themselves, fears to go.

Bitch Stole My Look! Paloma Faith vs. Sandra Bullock in Burberry Prorsum

Bitch Stole My Look! Paloma Faith vs. Sandra Bullock in Burberry Prorsum
Do celebrities get fashion dibs because they're from the same country as the designer? Case in point Paloma Faith vs. Sandra Bullock in this Burberry Prorsum getup. Does the UK native automatically win because she's from Burberry's home turf? Frankly, we're just looking for help awarding a winner in this close call. Both the Academy Award nominee and the St. Trinian's star wear the Paris-inspired T-shirt and vintage skirt beautifully. It comes down to a choice between some added drama versus a clean, simple approach. There's something we love about Paloma's over-the-top take on this combo. She looks like a society gal shopping at Harrods circa 1945. The maroon color complements the...

Film Review: 'The Liability'

  • CineVue
★★☆☆☆ The second feature from Craig Viveiros, The Liability (2012) straddles a number of interesting sub-genres (road trip, gangster yarn, the world-weary hitman). It's a shame these outwardly intriguing elements have to do battle with a predictable and pretty contrived story. Even an impressive visual canvas eventually plumps for style over substance as the script begins to drag and the pace slackens. A teen tearaway (Jack O'Connell) trashes her criminal stepfather's prized automobile. As a means of paying off his debt, he's given the job of driving a professional killer (Tim Roth) to a grizzly job up in the North East.

As their long journey unwinds, an unlikely bond develops between the pair, with the young upstart taking an interest in his passenger's macabre occupation. Before it all turns into a mutually cheery apprenticeship, a young Eastern European traveller (Talulah Riley) interrupts their disposal of a victim. Escaping from the duo, her

Colin Firth To Lead Matthew Vaughn's Spy Blockbuster 'The Secret Service'

As an actor, Colin Firth has proved remarkably resilient over his thirty-year career. After breaking through in 1984's "Another Country," a series of strong performances followed that never quite saw him become a huge star. But suddenly, 1995's TV version of "Pride & Prejudice" made him a heartthrob, and led to roles in Oscar-winners "The English Patient" and "Shakespeare In Love." Just as the roles started to dry up again, he played another seminal romantic lead in "Bridget Jones' Diary." And then, as his career seemed to creep into self-parody with the likes of "Mamma Mia" and "St. Trinian's," he got back-to-back Oscar nominations for "A Single Man" and "The King's Speech," winning for the latter. And it looks like another reinvention for Mr. Firth might be on the way. Aside from "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," his immediate post-Oscar roles, in "Gambit" and "Arthur Newman," have been disappointing, but he's
