Storyline

Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It'll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Written by Walt Disney Pictures

Goofs

Before the scene with the mops, Dave picks up the can of soda and as he turns away, the heel of his foot sinks into the floor a little. You can tell it's a set, because the "floor" is actually tile. See more »

Quotes

[first lines]
Narrator: The war between Sorcerers was fought in the shadows of history, and the fate of mankind rested with the just and powerful Merlin. He told his secrets to three trusted apprentices: Balthazar, Veronica, and Horvath. He should have trusted only two.

Crazy Credits

There is a very brief (30 seconds or less) scene at the very end. SPOILER: The scene opens in the store Arcana Cabana, where we see the Mickey sorcerer hat under glass, then Horvath's hat, followed by a hand (Obviously Horvath, since we see his cane as well) picking it up and a roach left behind. Dark, witty and edgy. An enjoyable modern Disney film.
11 January 2011 | by (Novelist of The Final Version) – See all my reviews

After a search of more than a thousand years, Sorcerer Balthazar Blank (Nicholas Cage) must recruit an apprentice to become the successor to the infamous Merlin. However, Horvath (Alfred Molina) has other plans, to resurrect Morgana (Alice Krige) to take over the world.

Frequent Disney film director Jon Turteltaub delivers a wonderful fantasy family film set in present day New York. The special effects and action set-ups are first rate, as to are the cast which includes the ever reliable and diverse Toby Kebbell of RocknRolla (2008) and Prince of Persia(2010) and Italian beauty Monica Bellucci to name a few. Cage is on surprisingly likable good form and looks particular comfortable in his role.

At first lead actor Jay Baruchel as Dave, the Sorcerer's Apprentice, is annoying, a mix of a bad impression of Chris Kattan's Corky Romano voice and gawkiness, who is reminiscent of a young Mike Myers. But as the film progresses he becomes as likable as the dancing mops, magic fights and sorcery stand off's.

It's has modern Disney stamped all over it, it's a little darker, with a witty and edgy screenplay by a number of competent writers. All in all its a great take on the elements of classic magical Disney films and other fantasy timeless tales.
