10 years after the first High School Musical made stars of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, High School Musical 4 is happening...
The Disney Channel is set to resurrect the High School Musical series of films, as it looks to cast a fourth movie.
The first two High School Musical films – that helped make stars out of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens – debuted on TV in the Us, with the third getting a cinema release. The last of the movies, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, was released back in 2008, but now the search is on for the cast of High School Musical 4.
This is a Disney Channel project, so it’s fair to assume this one will debut on TV as well. It’ll tell the story of the new generation of East High Wildcats, as they do battle with their rivals, the West High Knights.
The casting directors are Jason La Padura, C.S.A., Natalie Hart, C.S.A., and Kendra Patterson, C.S.A., of Lapadura/Hart/Patterson. Information on open casting calls to be scheduled this spring will soon be posted at DisneyChannel.com/OpenCall. Here's what Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, had to say in a statement.
Coming 10 years after “High School Musical” premiered, “High School Musical 4,” which is in development, will introduce a new cast of characters and actors to a new generation. The potential movie is described as continuing the story of “High School Musical,” while introducing new East High Wildcats and their cross-town school rivals, the West High Knights.
“High School Musical 4” was first announced back in 2009. Now with casting beginning, Jeffrey Hornaday, who directed the kids’ cabler’s “Teen Beach Movie” and “Teen Beach 2,” is still attached to direct and choreograph, should the telepic be greenlit — which is likely, given the huge success of the pop culture juggernaut.
The original “High School Musical” in 2006 starred Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman,
Launching the careers of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and more, the teen musical rom-com spawned two sequels, including a theatrical release for the third film, which brought in over $250 million worldwide at the box office. An additional spinoff, “Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure” starring Tisdale, was released straight-to-dvd.
At the time of its premiere on this day in 2006, “High School Musical” marked Disney Channel’s highest-rated telecast with 7.7 million viewers in the states. That record was later broken by the sequel “High School Musical 2,” which brought in 17.3 million viewers in August 2007, topping the original by almost 10 million more viewers, becoming the most-watched TV movie of all time. The film “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” marked the biggest opening day for any musical film at the box office, holding the

Zac Efron would be keen on a High School Musical reunion, despite having forged a career in rather more grown up fare in recent years, the actor has said.
Speaking to E! Online at the SXSW festival, Efron said he met up regularly with other alumni of the teen-friendly film trilogy, which began with two feature-length Disney Channel TV movies in 2006 and 2007 before eventually transferring to the big screen with 2008's High School Musical 3: Senior Year.
"We're all thinking about it," said Efron, who is promoting the comedy Neighbors at SXSW. "I continue to see all the guys from High School. Every time we do … there's just this look between us. It's so cool because we never forget a single moment of that experience."
Efron has starred in independent fare such as 2009's Me and Orson Welles
Monique Coleman - who played Taylor McKessie in the movies - spearheaded the reunion in order to benefit her GimmeMo' Foundation.
Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel, Kaycee Stroh, Olesya Rulin and High School Musical director Kenny Ortega will attend the event in December to raise money for Coleman's fund.
Fans can enter a contest to win a trip to Los Angeles and tickets to the party by donating $3 by December 1. Others who donate can win a variety of prizes, including clothing and personalised memorabilia.
Zac Efron will not be in attendance, but Us Weekly reports that he will record a special message for a winner of the donation contest.
The reunion is being held to commemorate the five-year anniversary of High School Musical 3: Senior Year in October 2008.
