Dr Matthew Roney a Canadian academic is very excited to find fossils such as an human skull going back 5 million years. However the site that is being excavated is earmarked for housing development. Dr Roney is drumming up publicity so he can have more time to look for more fossils.

Roney believes that the fragments he has found is some kind of an early version of human beings, maybe a missing link in evolution.

Professor Quatermass meanwhile has had his British Rocket Project overtaken by the War Ministry. Now under army control they are working on a project called Dead Man's Deterrent. Putting ballistic missiles on the moon and planet Mars which would be triggered in case of a first strike nuclear attack on Britain.

Quatermass is called in by his friend Roney as beneath where the bones were found is what looks like an unexploded bomb, but how could it had got there?

This first episode broadcast in 1958 is very atmospheric. It does not look cheap and you can sense that in the club room scene where Quatermass and Roney first meet for some drinks.

Nigel Kneale has written an intriguing first episode about his seminal sci fi character.
