Watch: New Trailer For 'Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom' Brings The Struggle For Freedom To Big Screen

22 November 2013 2:21 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Based on an inspiring true story, led in front of the camera by Idris Elba and guided behind the camera by Justin Chadwick ("The Fifth Grader"), it would seem that "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom" would tick all the Oscar bait boxes with ease. And yet, ready to hit theaters next week, buzz is rather non-existent for the rigorously respectful film. After trying a U2 driven spot, and one blazin' with hip hop beatz, a more traditional trailer (still with a bit of U2) has been unveiled and yeah, it looks exactly as is. Idris Elba plays the South African leader in a movie that looks like it'll encapsulate his story quite well, but what's missing is any kind of edge. Not that this movie needs to amped up and turned on its head, but perhaps it would've been better delivered with a bit of vitality instead of sheer reverence for the story being told. »

Mike Darnell to Exit Fox, Ending Era for Colorful Exec

24 May 2013 1:41 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

An era has ended at Fox with Friday’s news that Mike Darnell is stepping down after 18 years as a top programming exec at the network.

Darnell confirmed he would step down from his post as prexy of alternative entertainment at Fox when his contract is up next month. Darnell and Fox positioned the departure as his decision, but his departure comes on the heels of “American Idol” falling to record lows and a mixed track record for the network in unscripted programming of late. On Thursday, Fox’s most recent competition reality skein, “Does Someone Have to Go?,” bowed to a weak 1.3 rating/4 share in the adults 18-49 demographic in the 9 p.m. slot behind “Hell’s Kitchen.”
