The beauty bungle
16 May 2010 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

Eric badly needs extendable ladders for his painting and decorating business, but cannot afford them. Sharon decides to raise the money by entering a local beauty contest - 'Miss Fenn Street'. When Eric finds out his girl is to parade her body in front of dozens of leering males, he is livid. In the 'Mister Fenn Street' contest, however, is Frankie Abbott...

The reaction of the studio audience to this episode is strangely muted. Perhaps someone had put something in their free drinks? Its hard to see why they are not laughing as there are good lines scattered about, a cameo by the late John Junkin as the latest in a long line of Mrs.Eversleigh's 'gentlemen friends', and the debut of Rosalind Eliot as the dimwitted 'Celeste' ( here billed as 'Miss Lockhart' ), who works in Sharon's boutique. She will reappear in future episodes. Her catchphrase 'I dunno' ( delivered in a flat drone ) was repeated in playgrounds all over Britain. 'Citizen Smith' fans may remember Eliot as 'Fiona Sykes' the bakery girl.

As Frankie is getting into shape, we hear the theme to I.T.V.'s long running 'World Of Sport'. The actual contest is not seen. Instead we are told about it. Martin Grace, who plays the 'muscleman', was also a stuntman who worked on the Bond films. He sadly passed away recently.

Funniest moment - as the male contestants prepare to go on stage, amidst the perfect specimens of manhood, there appears poor old Frankie, looking like the last turkey in the shop window!
