Christopher Swain's epic swim of the entire Columbia Journey was a remarkable accomplishment - 1200 miles from the headwaters in Canada to the Pacific Ocean! This film documents that swim, as well as many of the environmental issues that brought Swain to make the swim and that he hoped to draw attention to during his many months on the river. The film presents an educational yet often humorous and entertaining look at how our optimistic but naive treatment of this natural treasure has resulted in such serious environmental consequences.
Some wonderful historical footage of the river as it was before the dams is included, as is recent interview material of Native Americans and others who knew the river before it was dammed. The narration and editing, as well as the music are very effective. Considering that the film had essentially no budget, it too, on a different scale, is a remarkable accomplishment. I highly recommend it!
