Storyline

Adrienne Willis, a woman with her life in chaos, retreats to the tiny coastal town of Rodanthe, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, to tend to a friend's inn for the weekend. Here she hopes to find the tranquility she so desperately needs to rethink the conflicts surrounding her -- a wayward husband who has asked to come home, and a teen-aged daughter who resents her every decision. Almost as soon as Adrienne gets to Rodanthe, a major storm is forecast and a guest named Dr. Paul Flanner arrive. The only guest at the inn, Flanner is not on a weekend escape but rather is there to face his own crisis of conscience. Now, with the storm closing in, the two turn to each other for comfort and, in one magical weekend, set in motion a life-changing romance that will resonate throughout the rest of their lives. Trivia

By January, 2010, shoreline erosion had left the Serendipity house completely in the surf. New owners hired one of the companies that moved the Cape Hatteras lighthouse to move Serendipity to a somewhat less spectacular but somewhat safer nearby lot in Rodanthe. Only the house's exterior appears in the film - the interiors existed only in a studio. The owners reportedly plan to remodel the house, recreating the studio interiors, to enhance its value as a vacation rental. See more »

Goofs

In the beginning of the film, when Dr. Paul Flanner is driving to Rodanthe, there is a short scene in which he's driving on US-17 south of Myrtle Beach, SC. (The store with the big sharks mouth entrance) This is nowhere near his supposed driving route. The store with the giant shark is actually the Shark Attack Souvenir and Gift Shop at 1295 NC Highway 210, Sneads Ferry, NC. See more »

Quotes

Dr. Paul Flanner: What keeps you safe?
Adrienne Willis: Well, you fall in love with someone, you know... and you make a family... and you become what you think you're supposed to be. And you change and you give up certain things. Then they look at what you've got left and you wish you... I don't know, you just think maybe you shouldn't have.
Dr. Paul Flanner: Don't.
Dr. Paul Flanner: Just don't do it anymore.
Adrienne Willis: ...Huh.

All the parts but not sum of the whole
3 February 2009 | by (the big screen) – See all my reviews

I personally think this is the most difficult genre to pull off - romance has to create some magical reality, and some plausibility: we have to believe it could , would happen to them and to us.

Nights partially succeeds in creating some atmosphere and some nice scenes but fails to ignite into magical.

Instead what we get is just too rushed and uses too many clichés - every scene feels like it came from somewhere else - and the sparks are somehow not fireworks but squibs.

It cannot decide whether to be gentle and meditative and mature, or to be unabashedly full-on.

All in all it will be a box office winner given the stars and the lack of other material of its kind - but really this is no classic.
