My husband and I watched the latest in a LOOONNNNGGG line of reality shows to be paraded by the American public, The Great American Dream Vote. It was like watching a U.F.O. abduction gone horribly awry. You can't believe it could possibly be happening, yet you can't turn your head away from the disaster you know is coming. Two men vie for the opportunity to get a lifetime membership with the Hair Club for Men, two obsessed pet lovers fight for their chance to build sanctuaries/amusement parks for their beloved animal sidekicks and two devoted mothers battle it out for the chance to make their daughters beauty queens, one a horse queen and one a Barbie queen. Then there's the two guys who made touching videos describing the dreams they wanted to achieve for their wives (watching the two guys I think the songwriter was in earnest while the firefighter was videotaped at gunpoint by an ambitious better half!) The creepy spots in the show made it a laugh-fest and a half for us, though I don't think the moments were supposed to be funny. You heard the audience "awwww" in charming approval as the little beauty queen talked about helping the children in her Miss America platform, childhood leukemia, then you heard them cringe when she talked about those poor kids getting buried with HER crowns on their heads, as if getting one of her crowns was a GREAT compensation for the whole suffering and dying thing. The chicken guy wanted to preserve the chicken way of life, but firmly stated that chicken would be big menu item of the day at the amusement park (I guess that would be the uglier chickens' fates!) Anyway, one episode was more than enough for us. I highly recommend you find your entertainment elsewhere, unless you like making fun of people's flights of fancy. It's like they took the most ridiculous dreams and ran with them; there are so many more deserving people out there.
