Richard tells Monica that letting her go was the stupidest thing he's ever done and he wants to marry her and have kids. Monica is getting weary because Chandler is carrying on about not wanting to get married in order to hide his plans to propose. Rachel finds out that Phoebe and Joey have each other as backup, meaning if they're both not married by the age of 40 they'll marry each other. Rachel is very jealous of Monica and wants a backup as well and asks Ross but Phoebe is Ross' backup. Chandler realizes he has to stop messing with Monica and propose already. Monica goes to see Richard and says wants to be with a grown-up but it isn't fair that Richard wants to marry her now and not before. Monica says she will need some time to think things over. Even though only about 10 minutes pass between this season finale and the premiere of the next season, Chandler has lost a significant amount of weight and Rachel's hair is noticeably shorter. However, these were unavoidable physical changes undergone by the actors themselves and can not be considered continuity errors on the part of the producers of the series. See more »

Rachel Green: Some people make deals with a friend, like if neither of them are married by the time they're 40, they marry each other.
Phoebe Buffay: You mean a backup.
Rachel Green: Yeah exactly.
Phoebe Buffay: Yeah, yeah, I've got that.
Phoebe Buffay: You do? Who?
Phoebe Buffay: Joey
Rachel Green: Joey? Are you serious?
Phoebe Buffay: Yeah. I locked him in years ago.
Rachel Green: Wait, so, if nither of you are married by the time you're 40, you're gonna marry Joey?
Phoebe Buffay: Yeah, we shook on it... but believe me, that is not how he wanted to seal the deal.

Richard tells Monica that he still loves her
9 June 2009 | by (Brazil) – See all my reviews

Richard tells Monica that he still loves her and that he wants to marry her and have kids, since he feels sorry until today of letting her go. This makes Monica stays in doubt about her relationship with Chandler and a little shacked, since Chandler never liked or thought about marriage. Chandler stays worried with all the situation and decides to propose Monica in their apartment, that is full of candles in a very romantic scenario.

Rachel is worried that she is the only one who doesn't have a ''back up'' in case she reaches 40 as a non-married woman. She discovers that both Joey and Ross are Phoebe's back ups, and of course she stays revolted about that and decides to talk to Phoebe.
