Storyline

Returning from Wales in a first class train berth, Thomas and Sarah vow to make the most of their personal attributes and utilize their wits to make their fortune. With only twelve pounds left, they set up shop in the dining room of a posh hotel posing as an auto entrepreneur and a French countess. Unbeknownst to them the other couple they take up with are also frauds, and the only person who knows the truth about them all is an enigmatic waiter who doubles as a lip reader and inexplicably offers Thomas the use of his high rent townhouse. Goofs

Lord Andover refers to the American President as Roosevelt. As the storyline takes place in 1910 or 1911, the U.S. President at that time would have been William Howard Taft. Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909) would run again for President in 1912 as a third party candidate against his hand-picked successor Taft, but both would lose to Woodrow Wilson. See more »

Thomas and Sarah have a change of luck!
15 August 2010 | by See all my reviews

January, 1912 This episode in my opinion is the equivalent of the dreadful 'Swedish Tiger' in 'Upstairs, Downstairs' which was the notorious low point of that particular show. Like that; the plot here is dreadful, nonsensical, and like the aforementioned; after all these years, many are still unable to follow it... However; ironically, it does lead us into the subsequent episode (am unusual follow-on story) which actually turns out to be one of the very best of the lot in: 'The New Rich'!

There is very little else that can be added about this awful episode, other than to say 'stick with it' - at least for continuity purposes so that you can really appreciate and enjoy how Thomas and Sarah come by the large house and wealth, and thus enables you to understand the subsequent episode, which is ultimately part two of the story.
