The start of The Giant's 6000 face turns
11 June 2016 | by (victoria b.c canada) – See all my reviews

Live from Knoxville, TN

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone & Larry Zbyszko

The nWo arrives to the building. They are in a jovial mood. The Giant says he wants a shot at Hogan's WCW title. Hogan says The Giant dropped the ball last night at Starrcade. Hogan tries to smooth things over with The Giant, but The Giant still wants a shot.

The Amazing French Canadians (W/Col. Parker) Vs Public Enemy

The French Canadians win. I wouldn't even call this a real match. It was weird to say the least.

3/4*

Cruiserweight Championship

The Ultimo Dragon (C) (W/Sonny Onoo) Vs Jushin "Thunder" Liger

Ultimo Dragon wins. This was an enjoyable match. Both had a lot of high-flying moves and it was consistently exciting. My only complaint is I wish it had gone longer.

**3/4

Strap Match

Konnan (W/Jimmy Hart) Vs Big Bubba Rogers

Mr. Wallstreet comes out instead. He says Big Bubba can't make it. Mr. Wallstreet is taking his place instead.

Konnan wins. This was a pretty tame strap match. As much as I was indifferent towards him, I actually feel kinda bad with how WCW used Wallstreet. He was at least a solid heel when he was I.R.S in the WWF, and Mike Rotunda in the NWA.

*1/2

Hollywood Hogan and Eric Bischoff are out next. Hogan and Bischoff act like Piper didn't beat Hogan at Starrcade. I'm gonna half-ass this. Hogan says Piper is a coward and you'll never see him again. He says he could run for president, but he doesn't wanna take a cut in pay.

Hugh Morrus Vs Kensuki Sasaki (W/Sonny Onoo)

Morrus has the match won with a moonsault, but Sonny Onoo comes in and nails Morrus with the flag to cause the DQ. This is another match that I didn't give a rat's ass about.

*1/4

Harlem Heat (W/Sister Sherri) Vs The Faces of Fear (Meng & The Barbarian)

Harlem Heat wins in a bizarre finish. Man, WCW had some weird finishes sometimes.

*

DDP is up next. He says the nWo is too strong now and he may just have to join them.

Hour two.

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay & Bobby Heenan

Glacier Vs Disco Inferno

Glacier wins with a spin kick. This was a comedy match. It's safe to say it wasn't very funny. Both Glacier and Disco had crappy gimmicks.

3/4*

Chris Beniot (W/Woman) Vs Chris Jericho

Beniot wins with a back superplex. This was tragically short! Whenever Beniot and Jericho wrestle, they should get at least 15 minutes.

Ric Flair tries to unite The Four Horsemen and get them back on track.

There is a midget match. I don't review midget matches.

Dean Malenko Vs Rey Mysterio

The match ends in a 10 minute time limit draw. This is as good as it gets for 10 minutes. Every time these two wrestle, they tear the house down. This match is no different.

***3/4

Lex Luger Vs Greg "The Hammer" Valentine

Luger wins easily with the Torture Rack. Valentine was strictly an enhancement talent for WCW at this juncture.

3/4*

Roddy Piper comes out. He says Eric Bischoff must have been mars, because he beat Hogan with the sleeper. Piper says that was his last fight because he's getting too old for wrestling. Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff interrupt Piper. Hogan says the only reason he took it easy on Piper was because his son begged Hogan to take it easy on Piper. Piper says he wants to fight Hogan one more time. Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Scott Norton, and Syxx run out and beat Piper down. The Giant comes down too, but he takes his time. Hogan nails Piper in the hip with a chair. The Giant refuses to chokeslam Piper. Piper is carried out on a stretcher. Hogan says The Giant dropped the ball, and says he's had three strikes. Hogan slaps The Giant, prompting The Giant to grab Hogan by the throat. The Giant asks if he has a title shot against Hogan. Hogan says yes and The Giant lets him go. Hogan demands the rest of the nWo sick The Giant. Hogan nails The Giant with the belt a few times before Nitro goes off the air.

Thoughts: I'm not exactly sure anyone was clamoring for a face turn from The Giant. That being said, the angle was still well done. I believe The Giant holds a record for most heel and face turns.

WCW was red hot at the time. They could afford to have all the beatdowns from the nWo. Not to mention the nWo was red hot as well. They would eventually get old. As far as the episode is concerned, it was alright.

5.5/10
