Same neighbour, different house
3 February 2010 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

The unscreened pilot for Thames Television's hit sitcom 'Love Thy Neighbour' begins with Bill and Barbie purchasing their new home, which is different to the one we saw in the series, in a nicer looking street, with flowers and trees in the front gardens, and not a gasometer in sight. No sooner have the Reynolds' left than the Booths arrive ( by car! ), back from a holiday abroad. The dialogue in their opening scene later found its way into a Season 3 episode.

When Eddie goes next door with a shovel, he takes not only a hydrangea, but also a hanging basket and a garden gate! What happens from then on is pretty close to the transmitted version. The other noticeable difference is that 'Joan' is played by Gwendolyn Watts. This talented actress, who sadly passed away in 2000, was blowsy 'Rita' in the film 'Billy Liar' ( 1962 ) and sexy clippie 'Iris' in two early episodes of 'On The Buses' - 'The New Inspector' and 'The Darts Match'. She is more refined than Kate Williams' version, almost as glamorous as Nina Baden-Semper's 'Barbie'. Watts was unable to do the series proper because of contractual obligations. I think it was for the best.

Difficult to say whether this would have worked had it gone out instead. Probably it would, but all the same I'm glad it was redone.
