Violence & Gore

10/10

The violence is strong and consistent, with violence being an aspect of every episode.

Characters can die from many ways (beheadings, neck slashing, burns, melted gold spilled on a man's head, stab wounds, minor gashes, rape, massacres, face smashing, etc). Even major characters that you won't suspect of dying has a big chance of getting killed. George R. R. Martin intended for this, he has stated that he wanted his book series to be realistic and unsuspecting. The violence in this series is brutal, realistic and sometimes gory. But, it is usually over quickly and is not lingered on for too long. Violence is still a strong presence on the show, however.

Beheadings are shown.

Jousting has been present in the show, with bloody results.

Battle scenes are normally bloody.

A numerous amount of soldiers get graphically stabbed by swords and spears, with blood spewing from throats and other body parts.

There are numerous grisly and gory images that will be upsetting to some viewers.

Some disturbing scenes of torture. (Especially in Season 3 and 4)

In one episode a horse is decapitated and another horse has its throat slit for a ritual, which may be especially upsetting for animal lovers.

There is some violence against frail, young women and children, which might be one of the most upsetting aspects of the show. In one episode, a knight starts beating a helpless young girl at the order of the king. In another episode a helpless young boy gets his throat impaled.

In Season 1 Episode 6 ''A Golden Crown'', a man has melted gold poured over him. He screams and gags in pain. His corpse later falls to the ground. Quick but really graphic scene.

In Season 1, Episode 9 "Baelor", a man is beheaded for a false accusation of treason. The actual execution isn't seen, but in the beginning of the next episode "Fire and Blood", it shows the sword that beheaded the man and it is covered in blood. Then you see the man's head, while his body is dragged off the execution site. Afterwards, the man's daughter is forced to witness her father's (the man who was executed) head on a spike outside the castle, she is crying and is in great emotional pain. She is then struck by a guard twice.

In Season 2 Episode 1 ''The North Remembers'', by the order of King Joffrey (son of King Robert), all the bastard children from King Robert are murdered by soldiers. A young prostitute's crying baby is grabbed from her arms and stabbed (it pans to the woman's face and the sound of stabbing is heard). The woman is in tears and is screaming. Another bastard boy of about the age of 5 is drowned. Babies are seen being grabbed and dragged by soldiers.

In Season 2 Episode 6 ''The Old Gods and the New'' a citizen throws a cow pie at the king and the king orders his soldiers to kill everyone who was in the city square. In one part of the scene, citizens rip a priest's arm off and tosses it into a crowd. This scene shows a plethora of blood, soldiers killing citizens, an attempt to rape an innocent teenage girl, etc.

Season 2 Episode 9 "Blackwater" features a very intense, violent battle scene in which many men are killed. This scene includes a man's head exploding, a man being hacked apart on screen, a man being partially beheaded with blood spurting out of the top of his head, men set on fire, and a man's leg chopped off, among other things.

Season 3 in particular ups the ante in this regard, as one character is seen getting sadistically tortured multiple times.

In Season 3 Episode 6 "The Climb" a young man is holding a crossbow. Then it pans to a dead prostitute. Her hands are tied up and is hanging from the roof with arrows shot into her body.

The Season 3 Episode 9 "The Rains of Castamere" features realistic and explicit killings and currently the most gruesome episode of the series. One victim is a pregnant woman and an innocent child. Lots of neck slashing that will upset viewers. Also, a man's wolf is shot by arrows, whilst in a cage, then later on in the next episode, the head of the wolf has replaced the owner's head, which will upset animal lovers.

The Season 3 Episode 10 "Mhysa" features a man cleaning up a plethora of blood and guts off the floor, which is the hall where "The Red Wedding" occurred.

In the end of Season 4 Episode 2 "The Lion and the Rose" a young man violently chokes on poison and collapses in front of his wedding feast. His face then turns a deep pale blue as blood and liquid ooze out from his nostrils and eyes. This scene can be uncomfortable to watch for some viewers as it is very confronting and detailed.

In the end of Season 4 Episode 8 "The Mountain and the Viper, two men are fighting during a trial by combat. In the end, the seemingly-wounded fighter trips the winning fighter, punches his teeth in and gouges his eyes and we see a large amount of blood coming out from his eyes as he is screaming in pain. He then gets his head crushed and there is a mess of gore and blood. It is the most graphically violent episode on "Game of Thrones", knocking "The Rains of Castamere" (a.k.a. The Red Wedding) down to second place for most violent episodes.

In Season 4 Episode 9 ''The Watchers on The Wall'', There is a long and intense battle scene, taking up about 45 minutes of the episode's 60-minute runtime, with lots of fighting and violence, including a man getting shot through the throat by an arrow and choking on his own blood, a man getting smashed over the head with a hammer so hard it gets lodged in his skull, a man having his head smashed against an anvil and more. Several minor characters, some of which have been in the series since the beginning, get killed in this episode.

In Season 4 Episode 10 ''The Children'', There is a lengthy and intense fight scene between a woman and a man; they punch and strangle each other, wrestle, kick each other in the groin, the man gets his ear bitten off and repeatedly hit in the face with a rock. The man falls off a cliff, and is later seen lying on the ground severely injured, covered in blood and with a large wound on his leg.

Profanity

10/10

Uses strong words, such as "f*ck", "cu*t", "co*k", "bitch", "ass", "sh*t", "bastard", etc., though most strong language is used to their literal meanings.

4/10

Wine is consumed on a regular basis, particularly during feasts and gatherings. It is implied that some characters drink for the sole purpose to get drunk. No drugs are consumed.

10/10

The show is extremely intense in some parts, there are some very in-your-face scenes during some episodes.

There are certain moments that are dramatic, tragic, and intense. Major and even minor characters who are of importance get killed off.

In the very first episode, a young boy climbs a tower and high up in the tower, he witnesses a man thrusting into his sister in the behind. The sister sees the boy watching with fear and confusion. The man grabs the boy, talks to him for a little bit, then pushes the boy out the window, hoping the fall will kill him. He ultimately survives, but is left paralyzed.

While the show features many strong female characters, the recurring instances of sexual violence (predominately towards women but sometimes towards men) is disturbing to some.

There are several scenes throughout the series that includes "white walkers", which are zombies that live in the ice and have swords, blue eyes, blue mouths, and scrawny bodies that might scare younger viewers

There is a scene in season two, episode "Garden of Bones", where a woman gives birth to a dark, shadowy creature.

Worthy of its own note is the episode "The Rains of Castamere", which features a particularly uncomfortable and gruesome scene which goes on quite a while (commonly referred to as "The Red Wedding"). What makes this scene particularly upsetting is the fact that three major characters who the audience has known through multiple seasons get killed off in a sadistic betrayal which comes completely unexpectedly.. This scene in particular has been called by many viewers and critics as the most intense, emotional, and upsetting scene in television history.

The second episode of the fourth season "The Lion and The Rose" features the death of King Joffrey who is poisoned and violently chokes in front of his wedding feast. After drinking some wine laced with poison, he proceeds to cough up blood and fluids as his face turns pale blue and bloody liquid oozes from his nostrils and eyes, whilst he chokes and dies. This death is very unexpected and may shock viewers.

The episode "Breaker of Chains" has attracted much criticism for its portrayal of a man raping his sister next to their dead son's body. This scene was met with very negative reactions from critics and fans alike for being downright cruel and pointless, as the sex is consensual in the books, and the rape confused and shocked many viewers, including readers of the books. This is a very uncomfortable and disturbing scene that has been described as "pure shock value with no point" by some viewers.

The episode "Oathkeeper" contained a scene where the White Walkers take a baby to a ceremonial area where a very creepy looking White Walker touches the baby and the baby's eyes turn blue seemingly making him turn into a White Walker. The episode ends with the sound of the baby crying repeatedly over the credits. This scene was universally described by viewers as extremely disturbing and uncomfortable.
