Regular readers of the site will know that earlier this year we ran a series looking at the classic films of Keanu Reeves. This was to co-inside with the release of the fantastic John Wick; now we turn our attention to another big name from the nineties, Tom Cruise. Each week from now until the release of the highly anticipated fifth Mission Impossible film, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, we’ll be taking an in-depth look at the films that we feel are his classics.
Tom Cruise has had an extensive and wide-ranging career. Granted, he is most closely associated with films like last week’s subject Top Gun and the aforementioned Mission Impossible franchise, but he’s done much more than that. Some of his earlier years had him star in Ridley Scott’s Legend as well as the romantic period film Far and Away, one of the three films »

Child soldiers, bumbling cowboys, martial arts masters and an odd ’80s icon are coming your way starting in October, Netflix announced Tuesday.
Beasts, based on Uzodinma Iweala’s novel, tells the story of Agu (played by newcomer Abraham Attah), who is ripped away from his family and forced to fight in an African country’s civil war. Elba (Luther) plays Comandant, the warlord who mentors Agu. The actor also produced the film, »
Netflix will roll out a batch of new movies this year, including Cary Fukunaga’s “Beasts of No Nation” and “The Ridiculous Six” with Adam Sandler, as it tries to establish itself as a force in the feature film business.
With a ripped-from-the-headlines plot about child soldiers, “Beasts of No Nation” is looking to generate awards heat, scoring a key Oscar contender berth on October 16, 2015. It will go head to head with other awards hopeful “Bridge of Spies,” a Cold War thriller from Steven Spielberg, the horror film “Crimson Peak” and the family film “Goosebumps.” Idris Elba stars in the film, which Fukunaga, hot off “True Detective,” directs. It set off a bidding war that saw Netflix shell out $12 million for the rights.
The film debuts worldwide on Netflix, in all territories where the internet platform is available, and on the same day in whichever U.S. theaters will play it. »

There are more than a few live-action fairy tale re-imaginings brewing inside the Hollywood system right now, but Robert Downey Jr's long-gesturing new take on Pinocchio just got a lot more clout. He roped in Paul Thomas Anderson to pen the fairy tale's screenplay. There's also a solid chance the filmmaker will take this on as his next directorial project. This project becomes the next step in the celebrity's longstanding friendship. The two of them have looked to work together for some time, and almost got the chance when Downey signed on to play the lead in Anderson's latest, last year's Inherent Vice, before the actor had to drop out due to pesky Avengers: Age of Ultron obligations. Downey is slated to produce this new movie with his wife, Susan, for Team Downey and alongside Dan Jinks, so there's little chance of this one slipping from their collective cracks, »

There is an alarming trend in remakes/reboots that has sprouted up over the past few years, that I first noticed with a pair of 2013 releases, Carrie and Oldboy. Instead of finding any sort of new angle into the story, they were both, essentially, shot-for-shot remakes of the original, but with a shiny new cast for the 21st Century to latch on to. With that being said, Terminator Genisys doesn't qualify as such, since it does have a few new things to offer, but it's still crafted in a way that doesn't pay homage to the movies that come before it, but becomes a slave to them, bombarding us with beat upon familiar beat that is probably supposed to evoke fond memories from the originals, but instead dilutes and complicates any semblance of originality.
I found it somewhat sketchy to see Paramount roll out a recent Terminator Genisys TV spot »
Bill Hader has yet to make a bad move. After crushing Saturday Night Live for years, he started with small parts in memorable movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Superbad, Tropic Thunder and Men in Black 3. He graduated to lead voice work with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, then went against type in the dramatic The Skeleton Twins. Later […]

This is a reprint of our review from the 2014 Cannes Critics' Week. A group of comedy writers, pushing for a “Tropic Thunder”-style gag about the type of pretentious, foreign, arthouse guff that wins festival awards, might very well land on the logline “unsubtitled Ukrainian sign-language drama” and we’d grimace and laugh accordingly. But then we watched unsubtitled Ukrainian sign-language drama “The Tribe” and were too busy gaping in astonishment to so much as crack a smile: this deeply compelling debut feature from director Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy utterly defies mockery with the seriousness of its subject matter and the intelligence of its execution. And it duly won awards, three in fact: the Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize, the Visionary Award and a Distribution Support Endowment Prize, this last especially good news, we have to think, because despite the difficulty of its themes and the unfriendliness of its comedy-gold logline, this »

Let there be no doubt that the Rachel Dolezal story will be told by Hollywood. The only question is what kind of story will be told?
Ever since the leader of the NAACP’s Spokane, Wash., division was discovered last week to be a Caucasian woman masquerading as an African-American, her still-developing tale has captivated the nation in a way that’s just begging for dramatization.
Sure, the 24-hour news cycle seemingly chews up and spits out this kind of spectacle before moving on to something else 24 hours later. And social media tends to find another target to make its meme du jour even quicker.
But Dolezal isn’t going to be forgotten that easily. More than a few savvy movie producers out there surely already know that.
What separates Dolezal from the rest is the way her story operates on two different levels: It’s both a tabloid freak »

Nobody gets Jennifer Aniston hot and bothered quite like Justin Theroux. When she first laid eyes on the screenwriter while visiting mutual friend Ben Stiller on the set of Tropic Thunder in Hawaii in 2007, he made her nervous. "He was wearing black, black, black," she says, "and I started to sweat just looking at him." (That's much nicer than what the 46-year-old actress told Pop Sugar in 2012. "I remember thinking he was very dark," she said of Theroux, now 43. "At first you think he could be like a serial killer, but he's the nicest person in the world.") The actors reconnected in 2010 on the set of their movie, Wanderlust, and they began dating the next year. »

Beloved movie makeup artist and Oscar winner Rick Baker will be retiring soon. In an interview with 89.3 Kpcc's The Frame (via Slashfilm), Baker announced his upcoming exit from major work in the film industry and the auction of some of his various film creations from over the years. "I said the time is right, I am 64 years old, and the business is crazy right now," Baker said. "I like to do things right, and they wanted cheap and fast. That is not what I want to do." "I like to do things right, and they wanted cheap and fast. That is not what I want to do," he added. "So I just decided it is basically time to get out. Special effects legend Rick Baker formally announced his retirement this week. Baker cited a “cheap and fast” philosophy in the movie industry that was at odds with his desire to ensure things got done right as the catalyst for his retirement. Baker also worked on the Men in Black films and Michael Jackson’s famous “Thriller” music video. The 2014 feature Maleficent will now stand as his last work.
Baker will, however, be auctioning off his famous work via The Prop Store, beginning today.
