You are my sunshine!

Warning: Spoilers
When a young woman's mother dies, she discovers her adoption papers. She wants to find out about her biological mother and approaches the Cold Case team for help. There is not much hope that anything can be found because of the time frame. As usual, these resourceful people go into action to solve what seems to be impossible.

We are taken to an earlier time when the parents of Hilary West, a pregnant teenager, are taking her to an institution run by nuns in order to keep her away from view of her friends and neighbors. It is a horrible place for anyone to be. Luckily for Hilary, she makes friends with Karen Watson. Both girls bond together in order to endure the horrors they experience.

Hilary discovers an irregularity that involved cash transactions as the different babies are delivered. Sister Margaret is a cruel woman that shows no redeeming qualities in spite of her dedication to God's service. After Karen gives birth to a baby son, Hilary notices how he is given away to a couple. She delivers a beautiful girl she calls Sunshine. She asks Sister Margaret to keep her for a few moments, bonding with the infant. Later on, Hilary reveals to Karen what she had found about the institution. Karen is angry because Hilary has been able to stay with her girl, and she lets her know how she feels about it.

A sad episode of this wonderful show. Holly Dale directed Jennifer Johnson's screenplay that deals with about how some institutions that are there to help people in need take advantage of their power because the people in their care are helpless. Liked Johanna Brady as the young Hilary, the sweet young woman thrown out of her home by careless parents. Michelle Page and Sandy Martin are seen as the young and old Karen.

The Cold Case team shows up their savvy in solving those impossible mysteries from a long time ago. Kathryn Morris, Danny Pinto, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry and Tracy Thoms play as an ensemble and it is a joy to watch them.

Heart Breaking

I am adopted and born in the era this show took place and will say the events of this were right on target for what happened to unwed mothers and babies during this time. I am reunited with my first parents after being separated 43 years and will say not only do I wish it hadn't happened as it did but also wish my first mother could have at least had a goodbye room to hold me, rock me, and comfort me before we were separated. I am thankful to have her in my life now I only wish it could have always been. It appears to me the writers of the Cold Case show have done their homework to make sure the facts were true to the time. So many times writers want to candy coat what really happened making it seems much easier than it really was. I appreciate that this wasn't the case with this sensitive subject.... Jo Ellen

I cried.
Cam55-14 March 2007
Goodbye Room was well done. The music, cast and story meshed into a plot that was cleverly created for a one-hour show. As with all good stories, it had me thinking about it afterward; A wishful alternate ending (that of course wouldn't have been so poignant), would have been of the two girls deciding to go together with their babies, and making a go of it with each others' help. If only Hillary had waited five minutes for her friend to scoop up her boy and join her. It also made me realize how many similar real-time heartbreaks happened during these years. I had to rate it excellent because any show that created this much emotion deserves it. ~ Cindy

Another Devastating Episode

This show has never let me down. True, there are some episodes on themes I am not invested in, but when they score they really score.

I was raised Catholic. I walked away when I was 15, but when I was younger the nuns did their best to indoctrinate me.

I have known outstanding Catholics, so I do not mean to tar all Catholics. I went to a Jesuit law school, and got an excellent education. The school represented the best in the Catholic tradition and philosophy, and I have always been proud to have gone there.

This episode shows the worst side of the church. And it did so without overdramatizing. Cold Case was a remarkable achievement. It is greatly missed.
