The film sets out a realistic version of Victorian theatre life. It relies on the notions of the illusionist's art and takes us by the hand through them. The joy of the film is to try and catch the trick. However the final plot twist, which I will not spoil, is dependant on a pure film illusion i.e. something that is impossible in real life and in science. Fine in Doctor Who or Star Trek where the story parameters have been set. It would be like Holmes and Watson using DNA to solve a crime or worse a time machine.
The film left me feeling I had missed the trick. That the machine, or story plotting, had a hidden trick which was not revealed. Alas the script writer appears to have resorted to the cheapest trick of all, a cheat.
Still very much worth watching with fine performances through out, great design and lighting. The execution of the editing and story structure were also of the highest order.
Hopefully someone will tell me what the illusion I missed really is and that damned machine means both less and more than it appears.
