***SPOILERS*** The robbery of factory's payroll office didn't go so well with one of the robbers Ted Hubble as well as the security guard shot to death with the other robber Bill Weaver badly wounded. It turned out that Hubble was really an inside man in the robbery and shot by his accomplice Bill Weaver to both keep his mouth shut as well as Weaver having his split in the stolen cash. This totally insane plan was cooked up by the late Hubble's sister gun moll Ella Weaver Bill's wife who now has to get Bill emergency medical help, or he'll die from blood poisoning, in having been wounded by the security guard during the robbery. That's after he shot his partner in crime, on Ella's orders, Ted Hubble.

With private investigator Mike Barnett put on the case he tracks down the late Ted Hubble's residence where in fact his killer Bill Weaver lives next door. It's not long that Barnett checks out Hubble's sister Ella's place and realizes that her shot up husband Bill needs emergency medical help and offer to get a doctor to patch him up whom he claims works off the books and won't-As required by law- report his gun shot wound to the police for a hefty price for his services.

***SPOILERS*** It's when the doc-Doctor Russo-shows up Ella and Bill plan to knock him as well as Barnett off after he fixes the wounded Bill up only to find out that he works for the police department and brought two policemen along with him. The double crossing pair of Ella and Bill if they got away with their crime in the long run would have done in themselves by having one or the other knocked off to end up keeping the lion share of the loot anyway. In this case Ella ended up getting a life sentence behind bars and Bill a one way ticket to the Sing Sing electric chair; that's after he was well enough, after getting medical help, to make the trip.
