Alone in Dispair
hellraiser711 July 2019
This episode is an honorable mention from the show, it's a rare one as this is one of the more of a character drama and a serious episode that deal with a real issue which is drugs. Yeah, in most animated shows there were a lot of anti-drug episode which I didn't mind as long as they tell a good story, and this is one of the ones I like. These are also the kind of episodes I don't really see in the animated shows today though we could use them again as the drug epidemic has gotten much worse.

The only bad things are there was one scene where Kimber was totally out of character. Kimber never does things like that, I heard of motivation but that was peer pressure, Laura didn't really say yes to playing in the concert. If Laura was going to be victimized by peer pressure it should have been in the high school, where maybe there is a talent show and there was some high school cliché that peer pressure her into signing up, which would make more sense as things like that happen all the time, let alone that what should of happened.

Another was there were way too many conveniences where Jerica/Jem shows up. I would have liked it if some of the other hologram characters had a hand in things, coming in at those times when Laura needs aid the most.

Now that that's out of the way lets get down to business, what really makes this episode unique is the fact that it's focused on one of the Starlight girls and Jem and the rest are really second-string players. We really get to know Laura and she truly is a character of sympathy as she is still reeling from the loss of her parents, suffering adjustment blues to her new home, but worst of all suffers from low self-esteem, so yeah she's not a happy camper.

We see she is seeking sanctuary from her troubles, but unfortunately trouble seeks her out and its name is Bobby Braddock. He kind of looks like Wheeler from "Captain Planet" only this guy is no Planeteer. We instantly know Bobby is a scum wad, in the first scene with him when he mentions how he knows Laura, that's a red flag because he clearly scoped her out as a mark. He's taking advantage of Laura's troubled dilemmas by offering what seems like a simple solution, drugs.

And sure, enough Laura's troubles have just begun, we just see Laura's life is just coming apart by the seems as the drugs are tearing her apart inside and out. The physical and mental changes are clearly there from her hands that have gotten shaky, she's more erratic and agitated, her face is gaunt she clearly hasn't been eating and sleeping right, and worst of all she is unable to play as well as she use to. You really get concerned for her life as things are escalating to a dangerous state and hope either she finds help or Jem and company help her before it's too late.

I really like seeing how Jerica is there trying to help her, which goes to show that Laura isn't alone, if many or just one person cares for her help is never far away. Drugs are never a sanctuary their a place of despair.
