****SPOILERS*** In an effort to improve his golf swing insurance investigator Mike Barnett gets lessons from pro golf champion Ted Boardman at the local golf course where he's to play Victor Brastow in a game of golf that afternoon. Both men really hate each other with Brastow threatening to disinherit his 19 year old niece Ellen if she goes through with her planing to marry Boardman. With Barnett tagging along for the ride and taking count as both Brastow & Boardman tee off suddenly a shot rings out in the bushes and Barnett, rushing to the scene, finds Brastow shot dead with a blank and confused looking Boardman holding a smoking gun!
Not saying a word if innocent or guilty a silent Boardman is arrested and later put on trial by D.A Havemeyer for the murder of Victor Borstow in what at first looks like an open and shut case on the D.A's part. That's until it's discovered that the gun that Boardman had on him was not the one, through ballistics, that killed Barstow!
***SPOILERS**** Barnett smelled a rat in all this and with Havemeyer later checked out the murder scene and found out that Boardman in trying to play the innocent victim, in being charged with the murder of Barstow, in fact hid the real murder weapon and switched, before Barnet came on the scene, it with a fake one. And he did it with his sand wick golf club in using it to dig up the ground and then bury the murder weapon or gun on the golf course. A fact that D.A Havemeyer and his team of investigators completely overlooked!
