Storyline

The climax of a play - the heroine being shot - proves all too real when the actress, Sarah Amberley, is found to be dead. Called in to investigate, Cork and Marriott try to make sense of who, among the small troupe, handled the gun last. What at first seemed a tragic accident becomes more sinister when it is discovered the Sarah had been pregnant. Following them to their next engagement, Cork learns that she had been having an affair with Jasper Greene, leader of the troupe, which his wife Emily - the actress who fired the fatal shot - was almost certainly aware of.
