New Orleans Film Festival to Showcase ‘Mudbound’ and ‘The Florida Project’

11 October 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Celebrating its 28th edition, the annual New Orleans Film Festival this year features a lineup of more than 230 films and a theme that stresses diversity, says artistic director Clint Bowie.

“We have a new mission statement with an emphasis on amplifying diverse voices and story- tellers from all different backgrounds,” Bowie says. “Out of that lineup, more than 53% are from female directors and 45% from directors of color, so it’s probably the most diverse program we’ve ever created.”

The festival will take place in The Big Easy on Oct. 11-19.

After receiving a record number of nearly 5,000 entries from 109 different countries — an increase of more than 20% over last year — the festival is welcoming over 400 filmmakers. Programmers have curated a slate with Louisiana-made films representing 29% of the lineup.

Anchoring the diverse program is the centerpiece movie, the Louisiana-shot, period epic “Mudbound,” pictured above, which premiered at Sundance and was acquired by Netflix.

Empire’s Lee Daniels: ‘I always see myself as one step away from a flop’

7 October 2017 2:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

He made his name with Monster’s Ball and Precious but, as Empire begins a new season, the writer-director-producer insists his work isn’t just for black audiences

Lee Daniels tells stories of divas who storm into meetings and demand their due; of washed-up addicts propelled onwards by unflagging ambition; and of scrappy orphans who couldn’t afford a bushel to hide their light under, even if they were so inclined. This autumn he’s all over UK television, with the fourth season of his hip-hop dynasty soap opera Empire and the first series of Star, a sort of R&B girl group Annie – so how much of it is autobiographical? “A lot. Most of it,” says Daniels, who recently announced another four upcoming TV projects and a film. “I don’t know how to tell stories unless I’ve lived them, unless I’ve eaten them, unless I’ve partied with them, »

Why ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Should Lead to More Female-Centered Films

23 July 2017 1:55 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

How has the box office loved “Wonder Woman?” Let us count the ways.

First, its opening weekend, which earned over $100 million in North America thanks in part to nearly universal support from the critical community. But that was just the beginning. Patty Jenkins’ movie went on to become the top earning live-action film directed by a woman, and passed earnings of its fellow DC Comics movies “Suicide Squad” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” It has experienced cultural victories too — look to the swarms of Comic-Con fans in full Diana Prince getups.

This weekend, with $389 million from the domestic market, “Wonder Woman” can add a new accomplishment to its arsenal — the highest-grossing movie of the summer.

Deadline reports that Starz is developing an as-yet untitled fictional scripted drama series “based on the the music superstar’s real-life experiences” and her “rise to fame.”

Set in 1986 New York City, the drama will chronicle the “rise of an ambitious bi-racial 16-year-old girl, an aspiring singer-songwriter who survived a difficult childhood to become the biggest selling female music artist of all time,” Deadline writes.

The Grammy winner’s biggest hits include “We Belong Together,” “One Sweet Day,” “Love Takes Time,” “Vision of Love,” and “Fantasy.”

Nina Colman (“Mahogany”) wrote the pilot and has signed on to serve as showrunner. She, Carey, Stella Bulochnikov (“Boss”), and Teri Weinberg (“Ugly Betty”) are among the project’s executive producers.

Carey’s acting credits include “Empire,” “Lee DanielsThe Butler,” and “Precious.” In 2016 she executive produced “Mariah’s World,” an eight part docuseries about her life on E! “I refuse to call it a reality show,” she said at the time. A lot of people have misperceptions about this and that,” she observed.
