Space Academy--Castaways in Time and Space
27 April 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Commander Gampu and Laura take a ship out to study a nearby Black Hole, soon yanked into it by a gravitational pull, crashing on a planet located within it. Chris and his young team of officers introduce themselves to a new officer, Paul (Ty Henderson), a survivor on a rough colony, mainly because of his intellect and instincts. Paul, at first, is cold and snobbish to Chris and Tee Gar, but when he goes on a mission with them to find out the whereabouts of Gampu and Laura, this emergency crisis could bring him closer to his team. It will take the Seeker losing power, crashing hard on the same planet at Gampu and Laura, and encountering a dinosaur-like beast (that is angry and ticked off, even able to cloak itself momentarily in invisibility) for Paul to gain a team spirit and put aside his loner mentality. This episode further elaborates on the telepathic mind linking power of brother and sister, Chris and Laura, as through this power the Seeker lands (even though with a bit of a rough landing) on the planet despite absence of many of the ship's controls (and the loss of power). A cool stop-motion creature, that roars and seems not-too-amused with "intruders" invading its planet, is showcased, and the story through this danger allows Paul to evolve as a human being and embrace the team concept. Also, little Loki uses the phrase, "Camelo Partis!" when wowed by Paul's interest in uncovering the kid's past. Seeing Chris disobey orders to return to the Space Academy in favor of finding his sister and commanding officer is interesting in that if there was any form of code of punishment (as in the military) he might have been in deep trouble. That said, he had his reasons and that trusty telepathy did help in recognizing that Laura was still alive and well but needing rescue. The episode also allowed Gampu a chance to see how well his training of the cadets had succeeded (even if one of his officers countermanded orders, and told Paul to drive the ship into the Black Hole regardless of protocol). On a side bit of fluff, Loki and Peepo have at it in games of computerized Tic Tac Toe, even putting up making the bed as the stakes--it is a kids show after all.
